How many catholics in Ireland?

    Hi,

Can you please tell me where I can find statistical data about catholics in Ireland? Let's say % share changes in 1970-2005. I come from Poland which, as I assume, has similar share of catholics (90% in Poland). So it may be interested to compare those figures.

    Thanks!

    Robert

I don't believe that this percentage will have changed significantly, though the census later this year might prove me wrong on that. It certainly would be a nice surprise to see atheism/non-religious as the fastest growing religion in the country :)

Two more interesting figures to pin down would be the percentage of the population who still go to mass every week (has been collapsing since the 70's, and is now under 50% nationwide, I believe), and the number of men entering the priesthood (into single figures, annually, nationwide). I don't know where you can get the first figure, though if the church releases weekly-collection figures, you might be able to work backwards from them. The second is a bit easier, as it's been reported in the media -- try searching on the Irish Times website.
