I need to get a lense for my 350D for shooting outdoors ,portrait and scenic.
the lenses i use at the moment are a sigma 30mm 1.4 for indoor portraits.
Canon 70-200 F4L for outdoor portraits and action.

I was looking at the sigma 18-125 DC , canon 24-85mm or maybe sigma 17-70mm i haven't used or seen any but if anyone has an idea as to whats a good one to go with what i have ,i appreciate any ideas.

    Angle of the 24-85 at 24 on a 350D ???
Would i still get a decent enough angle ?

Would be interested alright ,as long as it's not been in the family for years.

I think the EF-S 17-85 IS is a great walkaround lens. You should be able to pick one up second hand for around €400 I'd say.

    Hi,

I have a similar problem to you ... have a look at the thread on "If you had €1000 to spend on a lens then ..." ... this is one I started, I am getting some interesting ideas ..

What is your budget ? This will play a big role in determining what you are going to get ...

I have the Sigma 18-125mm zoom ... will probably sell it if you are willing to be patient while I get a replacement for it ... but to be honest I personally do not recommend it ... especially if you are already into L lenses ... it is very soft right through the range and hunts a hell of a lot in low light ... quite noisy too but that is not a big problem for me so far ... let me know if you are interested ... my Skype link is in the side bar ...

    Check out - http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=257&sort=7&cat=37&page=2

If you are going for Sigma, you should probably look more at their EX range ... the nearest they come to L ... Sigma have a 24-70mm EX in the €400 price bracket ... I've been looking for reviews for this lens ...

The only thing I am defintely doing is getting the 50mm F1.8 ... everyone is recommending it to me ... I had the chance to use one in Egypt earlier this year ... great for the price of USD$75 from B&H or €95 from www.ac-foto.com ... Gunns of Wexford street are asking for €170 .. I'm sure this is the fault of their supplier because I have found them to be trustworthy in the past... shame really I'd like to buy from them !!

    Cheers,

    Simon

what about the new 17-55 f2.8 IS? Seems like it's going to be a great lens.

17-85 sounds nice ,but i don't really need anything flash .
I'm not very experienced ,only at it 8 months so I'm still learning about lense sizing and crop factors.
I hate the lense that came with the camera ,it's like shooting through a perspex window on a windy day.

Ya it's the EF-S equivalent of the 28-135IS which is regarded as a great walkaround lens.

I was in California last week with a 50/1.8, 70-300 and the 17-85 and I found myself using the 17-85 99% of the time. The IS is a great feature for walkaround. Here's some of the photo's I took with it there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/corksurf/sets/72057594072216812/

    BTW, it's on technikdirekt.de for €539

I second the Canon 17-85mm IS lense, its brilliant, I also bought if from ac-foto.com and its the cheapest online. its a great range for a single lense and its very small considering its range.

It's the only other lense for that price that i was thinking of

... I read in another thread that many sigma lenses have problems focussing on the 20d body when an external flash is used ... not sure about the 350d but it may be worth checking out before buying anything ...

The first review in this thread talks about it -

    http://www.photographyreview.com/cat/lenses/35mm-zoom/sigma/PRD_332057_3128crx.aspx#review0

Anyone else had this experience ?

.... just tried an experiment with my Speedlite 420EX and Sigma 18-125mm zoom ... no problems with focus there in fact I was pleasantly surprised ...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭EireRoadUser

I heard about those problems, I have a sigma 30mm 1.4 myself and sometimes it will focus on a dark spot instead of the subject.
But because i only use it mostly indoors i can take my time and pick a focus point myself.
I didn't realize it was a recurring problem with the other lenses though

also have heard sigma lenses are soft wide open

I suppose you forget these things when lenses start rocketing up the L lane.

that 17-85 is going to get me into trouble if i go for it.
I only bought a new printer last week and its running out of ink already ,
    and i need a haircut.

ac-foto took about 2 days with tracking, the only thing that annoyed me was for that price they dont supply a hood, it cost me nearly €30 off ebay.

I have noticed there is a site i find i can rely on for reviews ,it seems to be the most unbiased for lenses and easy to understand test results.
    www.photozone.de
The reviewer actually says he found a couple of niggly flaws with the 17-85 but because it's so handy to use you forget about them.

How about an all together good zoom lens, Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 DG. Great lens I find, takes some getting used to but once you know how to use it to its fullest, its a grand all rounder for those quick moments..

3.5-4.5 is grand for me ,don't like shooting down a tunnel.
