Ok this is an ongoing issue.

i have the below system, i have an 80GB IBM Deskstar and a 250GB Hitachi something.

i was using the machine yesterday and randomly, the PC just went black, nothing on the screen. It then came back on about 20 seconds later and everything was in 256colours and huge!, it said that a problem occured with the NV something driver and i needed to shut down and restart or i'd lose all my work.

I did this, and then after the bios screen, a message appeared saying "bla blah/windows/system32/system or something like that is missing or corrupt, and i should try to repair it in the repair console.

I got to the repair console and as soon as i selected "1 E:\Windows" the machine froze. I can't open the cd drives or anything.

I also can't format the disk (not that i want to as i have about 300gigs of unsaved music and files on the 2 drives,).

    what do i do!!!!

Eurgh... sounds like the gfx card is on its last legs.
Make sure the fan is still running on the card (and that the heatsink hasn't come loose) and drop any overclocks you've got going... including your AGP bus speed in the bios.
tbh I'd stick a different gfx card in it, get the system back up and running, then see where you stand with the gfx card.
Could be something else of course... but this is where I'd start at least.

Ok well this is a new card. This problem was happening with my old card as well. The system would just one day not boot, and it would say the system file is corrupt and then i'd be screwed. Why would my PC freez when trying to do something in the recovery console?

This aint a gfx card problem, your windows installation has gone t!ts up.

If its 2000 or xp reboot from the cd and run a repair. This will keep all your files and settings but just repair the system directories and that.

hmm, when i try to get into the repair console, the pc crashes. also, how do you run a "repair"? I've never seen such an option that will just repair the file system and directorys.

also, why would this keep happening? hardware problem?

Swap the drives master/slave and install Windows on the non system (swapped) disk. That should tell you if you have a hardware problem.

Your system disk might be too full...

Sounds like hard drive failing and the driver is corrupted for the graphics card.

    regards

Well if it's locking up in the repair console, then it's pretty likely there's a hardware problem... the windows corruption only being a symptom of that.

Have you checked the ram out aswell?
Might get a memtest86 going on that mofo just to be sure.
I assume you've also got adequate juice going into the card and the PSU is properly rated... o_O

to run a repair boot off your os cd and it will give you the option to select a partition then do you want to clean install or repair an install.

i had something similar, first lost the graphics drivers, then the NTFS drivers:eek: good old Linux saved the day tho and could get my data back :) . The problem was a very screwed hard drive, so i'd definitely go for an install on the other drive.

How do you do that? i use XP Pro with SP2. When i boot from CD rom it says "Setup windows" or "Repair windows install" but when i hit repair, it bring me to that stupid sarea where you have to run commands and copy and paste crap manually. But of course, it crashes there.....

I've checked both RAM sticks and it happens with both.
I have been playing world of warcraft and downloading music for weeks with no issues. And then out of the blue it just dies like this....

How do i repair the boot sector?

You select Setup Windows, then you get an option to select R to do a repair installation.

Very helpful thanks. I'm gonna try removing some ram and stuff before doing this!
