You know you're old when...

Ok, so we're predominantly students and are therefore not supposed to act like grown-ups. But recently scary things have started to happen. So, I kind of wanted to see if I was alone, or if people could help to compile a definitive list of signs alerting you to impending grown-up-ness.

    To start things off...

You know you're getting old when... your friends start talking about marrying eachother.
... you contemplate getting a "proper job".
... you stop spontaneously going out on mondays and tuesdays because you'll be tired the next day.
... you feel bad about flying by the seat of your pants.
... you can not only relate to your parents, but sympathise with them about younger sibling's behaviour.
... you no longer have a teen in your age.
... your younger sibling's friends who were 5 ten minutes ago are suddenly intelligent, attractive and legally allowed to drink.
... babies whose nappies you changed have long-term boy/girl-friends.

I dont understand? maybe I'm dense...maybe its just too early/late..

    You know you're old when....

the barman tells you that you're too old to drink in your local and then you look around and realise that you actually are [and I'm only 19 btw...]

When you just sort of coast along figuring things out as you go with little regard for the consequences, like leaving an essay until the morning it's due etc.

Oh doll! I'm normally the youngest person in my local, unless there's a party!

You know you are getting older when...
    1. You put career choices ahead of relationships
    2. You want to be treated equal in a relationship
    3. You share picking up the tab with your date
    4. You say "no" sometimes, when you know he wants a "yes"
    5. You decide to go to a film alone simply because you want to enjoy it
    6. You wake up angry sometimes because he's not there with you, but someplace else

You know you're getting old when...

    1. You realise your younger sister doesn't remember the pound.
    2. You have 4 count 'em 4 standing orders on your bank ac...bleugh!
    3. You don't get ID'd anymore (and I'm only 18!! Do I look 40 or somethin'?)

an "outstanding balance" becomes less to do with how well you can walk after a few pints and more about how many letters the bank is sending you

When you start actually thinking about the quality of drink you're ingesting and not just how cheap it is.

You know you're getting old when
    - you plan to shop around next year for the best rate on your student loans
    - you laugh at kids who think that Ocarina of Time was the first Zelda game
    - your little brother is out-earning you
    - you pay off your credit card balance in full every month
    - you think before whipping out said credit card for shiny things
    - you realise that you're a whole 5 years older than some people who'll be in 1st year in September

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭humbert

Well having read most of those posts I can quite safely say I'm not getting old. *skipps off smiling gleefully*

Bah Bragg is hilarious, does he not live in a lovely house in Dorset, oh and the time he got mugged by a bunch of lads at an anti-racism/feel good/love one another/champagne socialist/etc gigs. That was good old fashioned irony. :p

You know you're old when you really like Billy Bragg's music.

Perhaps but aint you supposed to be turning Blue?

I dont mind socialists (though I hate socialism) but people like Bragg annoy me, but if its the music and message then the medium probably isnt all that important.

    Hmmm. Good conundrum.
But then I never said I was old... However it is an interesting catch-22 I seem to have set up for myself... More fool me.

Hey, I listen to both of those!

First time I realised I was old was when it dawned on me that even my little sister was too old to know anybody on the schools rugby teams at home. Now the only names I recognise are little children who were in primary school when I was watching their brothers play.
