Genral RPG questions and advice Thread

    Hello all,

I am an avid D&D player and many other RPG's

Let me explain the reasons for this thread.

Of late our DM has been throwing a lot of tricky obstacles our groups way,
and has led to the old (Monty Python) 'Run Away Run Away' routine.

So i figured I would start a thread for us players in a way of discussing methods and strategies.

You can post any questions regarding any RPG.

This thread is mainly for players rather than DM's (though you can post away, we know how you like to have you secrets)

    I hope thats all clear.

Let me throw the first question.

Its D&D, we have recently come up against a 'GreyShade Golem' and my character been a mage is pretty much defunct against him.
Does anyone have any tactics against such a foe?? (Besides the run in and Kill strategy)

Ps your thoughts on this tread would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Ichiro

You might want to post a bit more info than that, as not everyone will be familiar with every system / monster / whatever, so may not know why you're having a problem.

Whats the deal with this critter that is rendering your mage useless?

Look at ways to use the mages spells on the surrounding area and use it to your advantage.

I'm assuming the mage is useless due to a high level of resistance of the creature.

(note: personally, I hate it when players meet a creature and the player starts spouting "remember, lightning regenerates these!" when their character knows next to nothing about it....)

As Thaedydal said, start targetting its surroundings instead of the golem. this will completely negate any resistances.

Learn spells that bolster your teammates and give them better abilities. An 8th level fighter , hasted, stoneskinned, prot from evil, blessed, potion of heroism, giant growth, bulls strength (and the similar constitution one), aided is ten times better than a single fireball!

as hairyheretic said, more details please.

Post what your character knows about the creature. post who else is in your party. what are the surroundings and what spells do you have access to (levels etc).

then maybe a tactic can be worked out. Until then, any comments would risk giving away information that your DM would prefer you dont know and end up ruining the game for everyone.

("exactly how did your character guess that the golems only weak spot was behind its left knee and that a copper dagger would kill it instantly?")

If its high magic resistance, then yes, go with area of effect stuff. A simple grease on the floor around it should give it problems.

If you're high enough level, stone to mud on the floor, and once its sunk out of sight, end the spell.

If you have appropriate spells, buff the rest of the party.

They covered that one in a dragon magazine a while ago (ok, a long time ago, I'm old). The stone left over after a rock to mud ends has the consistency of soft sandstone. Any construct such as a golem would have very little bother breaking out of it, though you would have slowed it down for a bit.

my personal favourite use of rock to mud was when it was used on the keystone of an archway (actually several archways) to cause the ceiling to collapse.

    Grease, web, fireburst :)

As I said, its almost impossible to give a decent idea unless we have some details on the creature (did a quick search but cant find anything on a Greyshade golem? anyone know?)

In that case just leave it as mud, and let the thing flounder around down there.

Actually though, if the golem was completely encased in the mud when it turned back to stone, would it be able to move enough to hit and shatter the stone?

its not really a case of having to move to hit the stone. If you pick up a piece of sandstone you can crush it in your hand. the golem, being just pure strength and not relying on muscle-power, would simply wade through it, powdering it as it goes.

this thread gives me a cunning idea.....
