Under 18s Bringing Drink Into The Country

A mate of mine is coming back from germany today, and I'd like her to bring em back a ****load of cheap german booze, but unfortunately, she's only 16. The legal drinking age in Germany is 16, so she'll have no trouble buying it, but will it be confiscated from her in Dublin Airport, what with her being underage in this country?

Can anybody answer me this question?

Pack it well or all she will have left is a broke bottle, remember what the baggage handlers are like. :)

Do they even check your bags coming out of an airport?

    It wont be confiscated

Might be good to post this under Soc-Legal Discussion forum? There seems to be a lot of the legal eagles hanging out there that just might know the risks, etc.

You might also be well advised that Gardai' can be found on boards.ie who enjoy it just like us... They may have seen this thread?

Not sure what the deal is with bringing alcohol in is, but your mate will only be legally able to buy beer. Drinking age is 16 for beer and 18 for spirits, not sure about wine.

Yeah I'm afraid the drinking age here is 16 for beer and wine, 18 for Spirits.

I don't think so. Afaik, it's not illegal for an underager to be in possession of alcohol, just to consume or purchase it.

They probably wont check, it is illegal though id say cos shes u-18. But since shes comin from Germany shell go thru the blue channel and it is VERY unlikely that they will check her.(if they do it may be confiscated if they find out shes u-18). There are so many ppl goin thru Dublin Airport at this time of yr anyways. make sure she thinks of something else while she goes thru customs, if she looks nervous or edgy they might get suspicious but I say its unlikely.
    Go for it

Tell her put it in her main luggage and wrap it up well.

Came home from holidays this time last year with 2L's Vodka, 1L Whiskey and 1L of Peach Schnapps all wrapped up in my main luggage and I was only 17.

I dont think youre supposed to put alcohol in main luggage. Coming home from greece last year the girl at the check-in asked me had i any in my luggage. i said no, not thinking, then i realised i had & she told me to take it out, so i had to open my case at the check-in & take it out (luckily it was easily accesible).

You could probably put it in & get away with it, i always did before then, & i dont know what the reason for it is, but according to that girl its not allowed.

Should get away with it in the main luggage, wouldn't know official laws or anything

yeah, i'd say she'll get away with it ok.

It is illegal however, as importing alcoholic beverages is restricted to those over the 18, afaik. Also, it is illegal for those under 18 to be in possession of alcoholic beverages. Worst case scenario I'd say is it would just get confiscated.
