"We're going to give you an overview of the iPod and then move onto some other produts. we've shipped over 65 million ipods as of june, and there are lots of acccessories. there's a new place you can use your iPod [shot of ipod toliet paper dispenser] 70 percent of the new cars sold in the US offer iPod connectivity as an option."

"We've sold over 450,000 Nike +iPod Sport Kits and it's been less than 90 days."

10:04AM - "So let's' delve into the products!"

10:05AM - "Let's start today with the ipod. It plays music, tv shows, videos. we're going to enhance it a lot. we're going to start with the screen. It's 60 percent brighter. we;re increasing the battery life from 4 hours to 6.5 hours on the big model. We're improving the earphnes too, they'll come standard."

10:06AM - "You might be listening to Abbey Road or Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, and one track doesn't flow seamlessly into the next. We are going to put this back together as it was intended and offer Gapless Playback for songs encoded with MP3, AAC, and Apple Lossless."

10:08AM - Instant Searching: lets you search more like Spotlight. Faster scrolling, shows the alphabetical section (L) as an overlay on the screen. We're also adding something new today, which is: Games. These are much more robust and funner games. They're all designed for the wheel.

10:09AM - Game clips: Zuma, Texas Holden, Mini Golf, Cubis 2, PacMan, Tetris!, More Tetris! Mah-jong. ... You can buy them today off the iTunes store, and they're going to sell for 4.99 each.

10:10AM - video battery life: 75 percent longer
The most important feature today is we're going to make it more accessible: We're lowering the price to $249.

10:11AM - 30GB 7,500 songs 40 hrs video $249 80GB 20,000 songs 100 hrs video $349 Now, lets' take a look at the iPod nano. It is the most popular mp3 player in the world. So today, we're going to introduce an all new nano. It's made out of aluminum, and it's even thinner than the previous ipod nano
Maybe the most obvious feature is we're bringing back colors: Blue Pink Green Silver and Black. Battery life: 24 hours.

10:12AM - So, second generation nano: thinner alumninum case, 5 colors, 40 % brighter display, 24 hour battery.

    2GB (aluminum only) $149
    4GB colors $199
    8GB (black only) $249

10:13AM - We've got some new packaging for the new nano as well. It turns out the be 52 percent less volume .. it redueces the amount of fuel burned to ship them around. All of these new iPods are available today.

80GB model sounds pretty nice but other than that the majority of what they list is covered already by a rockboxed iRiver.

You would have to but you could just buy it on the Irish site.

Yep, the new iPod's are now on sale at the Irish Apple.com store:
Go to http://store.apple.com/ and choose "Ireland" from the drop-down list at the bottom of the page.

    €289 for a 30GB player, €399 for an 80GB player. Impressive!

Bugger, just bought myself a 30 gig ipod video. Ah well

Not a lot between an 8GB Nano and a 30GB Video, is there? Like €30. The Nano is a very handy size and all, but the Video can obviously hold a lot more content and can do video. Good to see that the battery life is better when playing videos. A much needed improvement.

It'll be interesting to see what their video appliance will be like, the one that's designed to connect to a TV. That's supposed to be the killer app for downloading videos.

There was talk of a widescreen video Ipod, but that seemingly didn't happen this time around.

Sounds really good altogether, 80 gb iPod, whoo. Don't really get the brighter screen thing though.

Yet again, apple have let down the people of Ireland. We are still waiting on downloading of Tv shows and now we can't download movies.

    I downloaded Itunes 7 and I can't see much of a difference

as for the new nano- no video????????????

way behind the new zen V which HAS video

on the spec sheet for the 80GB it says its supports mpeg-4:

MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640-by-480 pixels, 30 frames per sec

    Does that mean divx/xvid support?

Bejeweled 2 and especially Zuma play really well on the iPod. Bargain for $5 each too :D

You must be kidding ! Those who beat Apple up just for the sake of it risk seriously losing credibility !

On the TV shows / movies issue, I'm pretty sure that the limitation here is not with Apple at all but with the license etc. . given that the technology is already in place, I'm pretty confident that Apple would open up this revenue stream as soon as they possibly could. .

If you can't see much difference with itunes, i really have to suggest that you pop along to specsavers and get them to give you the once over. iTunes 7 organises music / movies / podcasts much better . . gives you a vastly improved utility to manage what is synced to your ipod and includes free album art, which you can download instantly with a right-click . It is the most significant release of itunes that I have seen since the beginning.

With regard to video on the nano, I agree that other units are offering this now but I'm really starting to ask who would possibly want to watch video on a 1.5" screen. I have the 30GB Ipod video and when I am travelling I still take along my 5" widescreen portable DVD player !

I'm impressed. I must say, iPod have really improved lately. 80GB for €399! Nice! 20 hours playback? Nice!

And as far as I know, rockbox has been ported to this. Can anyone confirm this as if I was able to get rockbox on this I would be very tempted to trade in my H140. iRiver have really neglected the high capacity market as of late. Double the capicity, half the size with video playback at a nice price with the iPod.

If I knew RockBox is was available on this, it would pretty much seal the deal because I can't stand itunes and the navigation system of iPods. File Tree navigation is a big thing for me.

Never heard of RockBox tbh, but there homepage says:
Rockbox is an open source replacement firmware for mp3 players. It runs on a number of different models:

    * Archos: Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder, Recorder V2 and Ondio
    * iriver: H100 and H300 series
    * iriver: H10 series
    * Apple: iPod 4th gen (grayscale and color), 5th gen (Video), Nano and Mini 1st/2nd gen
    * iAudio: X5 (including X5V and X5L)
    * Additional models are in development
Reckon i'm gonna get the 30gb model myself. Had one of the first Creative Zen's when they came out about 2 years ago and found the touch panel the most headwrecking interface around. I tried the iPod's nav click wheel and find I like it.

RockBox is the mother of all firmwares (Rio Karma's kicks ass but only available on the Karma, which is out of production). Reading misticriver.net it seems a lot of iRiver owners may be switching to iPod and everyones deal maker/breaker is whether or not RockBox will be available on it. From reading a big post on the new iPod, it seems it will be available in a few weeks. Hopefully by which time I'll have enough cash to get one myself.

the student discount on ipods is gone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Forgot about that. I tried the education link but it didn't change the price. What was the old discount? 10% off? Free engraving too, I think I'd be putting something like "If found please contact:"

Anyone want to buy H140 for €400? ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Just rang them up and there's definitely no student discount on the 80GB model because of the price drop. Still though, €399 is a great price for this.

I was thinking of doing that, but me being a bit of a fad boy, it may effect selling it on.

yeah, could set up a new email address specifically and give the username/pw to the new buyer:) You'd only ever need to check it if it was lost.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 7,755 Mod ✭✭✭✭delly

That could work all right, but i decided just to leave it blank and have gone ahead and made the order. Spending money always feels good :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

You already ordered the 80GB? Nice one. Make sure to keep an eye on rockbox.org for the port to iPod 80GB. It's a brilliant firmware.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 7,755 Mod ✭✭✭✭delly

Nah, just got the 30gb. I'll defo check that rockbox out though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Good stuff, I'd be looking at the 80GB myself. I hate having to delete stuff off my H140 to allow room for new stuff. Breaks my heart:o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭Blaster99

I didn't think Rockbox supports video on iPod's?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

yeah I'm not too sure about that. I've asked on a thread on MisticRiver and waiting for a response. But with RockBox you can boot back to the original firmware anyway so it's not a problem:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,008 ✭✭✭rabbitinlights

My 80GB should be shipped on monday. Cant wait.

Time to upgrade my 30GB 3rd gen after all this time.....

if or when rockbox is out for the 80gig ipod i'll be very tempted to buy one.

would rockbox allow greater file playback right like .ogg etc.?

i never tought i'd see the day when i'd return to an ipod but it's getting closer tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

You have a H140 too, right? I'm pretty sure ogg is supported by rockbox. I'd be definite it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

yeh i do, it's just with summer and all it's been ages since i actually used my h140 only really use it to/from college

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,268 ✭✭✭Elessar

Bought a 2GB Nano today with the CX300 earphones. Cant wait!

I have the great i-Hp120 (or H120) but its a pain having to reserve a pocket just for it and songs take longer to load with rockbox. The small size and 24 hour battery life will be a great help with the nano.

Weeeeelll, mpeg2 playback works at about 6fps on the iriver, but I'm not sure if this applies to the 5G ipod. Anyway, you can still boot it up with the ipod firmware if you want to watch video (and blind yourself with the small screen).

On another note, I thought Toshiba would be the first out with the 80GB drives in their gigabeat player, what with them manufacturing the drives and everything...

went over to the states with $400 to get the 60GB IPOD only to find out they had dropped the price drop to $300!

didn't even see the 80GB there.

Does anyone know if this new software can be added to the 60gb models? Gapless playback would be nice...

As far as i've heard, next time you connect your iPod up to iTunes, an option should come up to upgrade the firmware.

what firmware is the latest so? I downloaded itunes 7. It seemed 'analyse gapless properties' on the library on my PC then that was it. I connected up the IPOD but it says my Ipod is up-to-date.

I'm running software 1.1.2 it says...

    Folks,

Off to the US for a few days next week - anyone know of any problems with bringing back an iPod from there to Ireland? The 80 Gb model is $349, which equates to over a 100 euro saving!

Anyone know if there are any potential issues with video formats from/to the iPod?

Similarly, any known issues with video format on a US Archos 604 in Ireland?

    Thanks,

    Cilldara.

was over in Dixons in Tallaght this evening and they had them on display (the new nanos in green and pink) They are very nice devices and the colour adds effect.
The 4gb version is 209; not bad considering.

BTW the Apple 30gb video is now retailing in Dixons for 280, can't beat a fifty quid drop in price.
