When i plug in via USB it makes the sound that it has been plugged in. Down at the bottom right where i eject it there isnt a drive letter attached to it. Heres a pic:

Now first thing that sprung to mind was it isnt getting a drive letter cos somethign else is takeing it so i went to Disk Mgt to try manually assign it a letter but it isnt listed along with the C drive but it is showing up underneath that it is there. Heres another pic:

Anyone got any other ideas? Ive got lots on this i kinda need

    Thanks

Could be the USB bridge is dodgy I've had that happen to me before, just take out the HD and put it into another enclosure or connect it directly to the PC if you can.

If the HD still exhibits the problem even when plugged straight into the PC I would probably suggest running a file recovery program to get as much as you can off the drive.

I assume that 102MB partition with 279GB unallocated is not normal.

I actually tried connectign it to another enclousre before to no avail unfortunately. Ive read elsewhere though that if i connect it internally it can work sometimes. Theres no bad sound like the Harddrive is broken anyway (i know what that sounds like!!) Can you recommend any data recovery tools? I hear these leave a right mess and some dont even keep the original file names? I got one that i tried just for a few minutes to see how it works and it was getting a lot but ive nowhere to send it to unfortunately because i dont have another 200Gb free anywhere!? I am probably goibng to get a 500GB Western Digital External one so will i have to wait until i get that to do the data recovery?

And if i was to recover a lot of files can i every use this harddrive again if i format it somehow?

That 2nd drive, disk2, isn't being assigned a drive letter. Right click and assign one. It seems like you only have a 100G partition on it, there's 280G un-partitioned. Is that right? If it's not then the partition table could be fecked up on you.

is it possible to assign a partition to it when it isnt listed in the above table? the only options it gives me on it are:

Right clicking on the left hand side 102MB free space section:
    OptionOne.jpg

Right clicking on the right hand side 279.37GB unallocated section:
    OptionTwo.jpg

Should i delete that 102MB partition?

If that's not the same partition table that was on it before, I'd reckon something has mucked it up.

Look up a partition recovery program and see if you can recover parition segments.

This worked for me on 2 hard drives.

sorry i aint too up on tech stuff. is this just a programme that will join them back together? Is there anything to do with the "New logical Drive" option on the 102MB section?

Maxtor OneTouch external hard drives from experience (I've had two die on me) do not work correctly in Windows when plugged straight in. Maxtor do something to the file system it seems that causes the drive to not mount properly in Windows and show in My Computer.

I had to use a file recovery program to get most of the data off the drive, I used the freeware PC File Inspector Recovery software and got 90% of the data off them.

I've also had some positive experiences with Restorer 2000 (commerical app).

FYI both Maxtor hard drives are working perfectly in third party enclosures now formatted normally through Windows.

thanks, its actually not a one touch. it was one mounted into an enclosure so im not sure what type exactly. i got a link to a great programme that i have been able to copy files from and they paste in a folder within the folder of the application on my c drive, it got the contents of a folder called "documents" exactly how it was and did it very quickly compared to a different tool i had tried. (5 mins for about 4 GB) here it is: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

    its also OpenSource software!!
