With more and more folks getting their news from the www, does anyone think that a local website will overtake a local newspaper in Ireland anytime soon.

you read should come up with some examples of your own I can't think of any.

I dunno if some company out there has combined a neighbours forum/network with the local paper maybem but I don't think any local newspaper have the money/innovation to do big things on the web.

doubt it; the nationals have struggled to create a worthy web-presence and the locals are even worse.

Hard to read the web on the bog, even now - so its unlikely.

What, you never brought your laptop/pda/smartphone to the bog?

I don't think local websites can do it for the same reason as flogen mentioned. They just don't have either the resources or the readership to make it viable.

I work for an up and company local paper in Dublin and I can safely say there is now a bigger demand for local newpapers than ever before. We started 3 years or so ago and such was the interest that the company broke even within six months and was able to expand a lot quicker.

The circulation is increasing from month to month as people like to combine local news with national. There are still a lot of people out there who are somewhat computer illiterate and prefer the 'old fashioned' trip to the shop for their daily dose of news.

Looks like the BBC are getting in on the act or at least considering it. The local website is def the thing of the future as news and video can be added in real time rather than on a weekly basis.

But the BBC can afford to do it as they are not dependent on advertisers, whereas local newspapers are.

Is there any Irish regional newspaper websites worth having a look at. Ive dug out a few and they are dreadful, some not even updated in weeks.
