Ryanair Now Charing for Online Checkin

Just seen this on the Ryanair website

Ryanair also announced today a new online check-in and priority boarding service enhancement that will allow all passengers to enjoy online check-in / priority boarding for just £2/€3 per flight from 1st November. This service improvement will extend the option of priority boarding to all passengers and not just those travelling without checked in bags as was previously the case.

So we now all have to pay to check in what next?

Pay for priority boarding - can't see a problem with that. There is still the option of not paying, so noone is being forced into anything.

The plane has enough seats for everyone, I can never understand what the rush is with people.

This is most likely in response to easyJet's new Speedy Boarding, where you pay a certain amount to get on before the preboards.

It always cracks me up when I see everyone standing in line for about 20 minutes to board the plane while the smart ones are still sitting reading the paper.

This is a total waste of E3 which would be better spent on a packet of Wine Gums for takeoff.

It's in the latest news section (18.10.2006)

The news release is a little vague. If it's €3 to get priority boarding then fair enough, I'll just board last. If I have to pay €3 to save them money by checking in online then Ryanair can **** off and I'm back on EI & FastPass from next month.

The charge for "priority boarding" (which is a joke if you're being bussed - you'll be first out on the bus, yeah, but don't count on being first on the a/c) is reasonable, though people are a tad misguided if they take it. The charge for online check in is ridiculous.

I would have thought that they would charge for you to check in with an agent as your using man power and have the checkin online free as no man power is used.

Having used their online check-in last week for the first (and second) time, it's brilliant, but I'd be fu<ked before I'd pay an extra €6 for a round trip to save them any manpower or effort.

Does this also mean that no matter how early I check in, there'll be no priority boarding unless I pay the extra money?

Thankfully I only use them for maybe 4 flights a year.

Personally I think this is taking things too far. Burning someone for checking in online is unnaceptable.

Exactly, since you're actually saving them money. Typical O'Leary.

Very bad form. It is handy and is saving them on checkin staff. Most other airlines in Dublin are now using web checkin and RYR are first to charge for it. EIN will start using it in a few weeks.

The luggage charge also when a lot of people are forced to check their gear in because of the new security measures. To get worse as well I belive!

The problem is that when they're in a hurry to get the plane loaded, which happens a lot, the priority boarding goes out the window and it's a free for all as usual.

It's a great service and very handy if you're going to be tight to make the check in time.
At least for 3 euro you get an extra hour to get to the airport.
I don't agree with charging but how much would another flight cost you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

    Off the website
Passengers travelling with checked in luggage will (from 1st November) be able to enjoy priority boarding at departure gates for £2/€3 per flight. These passengers will then be entitled to board the aircraft first and choose their seats. This will be particularly advantageous for families and groups who wish to travel together.

That's new but because of the bit below about families, it may cause some problems
Those travelling with hand luggage only will also have the option to enjoy the double benefit of bypassing airport check-in queues and priority boarding at the departure gate by checking in on line for just £2/€3 per flight.

You could do that before and at NO CHARGE
From 1st November, families with children will no longer be pre-boarded however they will have the option of online check-in and priority boarding if travelling without checked in luggage or priority boarding purchased at the airport if travelling with checked in bags.

So if you don't pay the fee, your kids may end up sitting away from you especially as they are going to give up pre boarding families

This is a disgrace and Ryanair should not be allowed get away with it.

So what happens when everyone decides to pay the extra E2/3 for priority boarding?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

Mainly going to be groups who want to sit together or families, maybe the
elderly who need assistance or somebody who may be late for check in.
Everybody else will take their chances.

There's a total fighting tournament to decide priority. Which costs passengers from other flights 2 euros to watch.

Or even female air hostesses fighting over who gets the last standby seat.

    Now we're talking ;)

    Standby? On Ryanair? Hahahaha.

Do Ryanair care about Public Relations? I have travelled with them several times with my 3 young Kids and the preboarding 1) thrills the kids to bits if they are first on the plane and 2) relieves some of the parental stress caused when flying with young kids. I would have thought that from a health and safety point of view also ( All Airlines tell us it is their no one priority) that preboarding families and young kids would be the safest option. Now you have to pay for the H&S option!! I don't think most people have a problem with kids being allowed on first! Afterall - they are potentially his future paying passangers !!

Ryanair care about money. Nothing else but money. Does anyone really think O'Leary offers "€1" flights for the benefit of the public? Did you ever try to change a flight, cancel a flight, turn up without id at check-in, check bags in, late book etc. All money spinners. I'm not saying some of the other airlines don't do this but with Ryanair its black and white. You don't pay you don't get. This move forces family's to pay the extra to ensure they get seats together. You got to hand it to them but, they know people will pay so they charge.

Just used the online checkin facility for a flight tomorrow and Friday, wasn't charged (but I booked pre-Nov 1st)

They've changed the list of questions you have to answer, one of which is "Have all passengers on this booking paid for online check-in/priority boarding at the time of booking? (Passengers who booked before the 1st November 2006 please tick YES to proceed) ?"

The first page still says passengers with checked baggage can't use the facility, and the boarding pass says the same.

    Teething problems I suppose.

Travelled on Ryanair on weekend of Nov 1st, when this new priority boarding was introduced. Normally I'm a fan of Ryanair, they've made travelling so much easier/cheaper, but not allowing people with small children or elderly people to board first is simply bad manners. We have 2 small babies. On way out of Dublin when the new rule wasn't implemented yet, we had no problems at all. On way back, with new rule, we were one of last to board the plane as we didn't want to queue for 20 minutes .. but with small children, a buggy and few bags we need a bit of extra time to board the plane ... result: 10 minutes delay and screeming kids!! If that's what Ryanair wants, that's what they'll get. Families with small children will bring down Ryanair punctuality stats. Maybe that will teach them so good manners.

Ok ok, sorry to bring this back up now, but I want to book flights with Ryanair online thing. I fell that paying€6 to check-in online is a joke, so am trying to avoid it obviously. But is there any way I can continue, while keeping the option at "How many bags do you want to check-in"? And, if I did do this, would I be able to go to airport on the day of the flight, and still check-in with a bag? Or would I have to pay for that too? I dont care whether I'm last getting onto the plane at all, so thats why I want to avoid this ridiculous charge

When you select 0 bags the following should appear below the boxes:
You have selected our Online Check-In/Priority Boarding service, passengers who qualify for this service can avoid check-in queues and be priority boarded onto the aircraft. Don’t forget to check-in online from 2 days up to 4 hours prior to the scheduled flight departure time. Click to Remove this service and just travel with 0 bags.

    Click on the blue "Remove".

You will have to pay for checked baggage, whether pre-booked or on the day. You will pay the discounted charge if pre-booked.

I recently flew easy jet and despite being a low cost carrier like Ryanair they are streets ahead in every department, my flight was slightly delayed but the easy jet representative did apologise and give a valid reason for the delay which i appreciated, anytime ive flew with Ryanair they will go out of their way to fob you off with some lame excuse as to why the flight was delayed amongst a million other things, pathetic airline.

Some people will pay the priority charge. My cousin recently had to sit a couple of rows away from her 3 year old because they were nearly the last on. This makes Ryanair (and the other passengers who wouldn't swap!) look really bad in my eyes.

I tend to avoid Ryanair as much as possible but sometimes getting home a couple of hours earlier is worth more to me than the hour's discomfort on board.

Went with easyjet from Belfast recently, on the return from Luton they put me on an earlier flight at no extra charge as I had got to the airport early,

    Great service.

A point was made before that I thought was interesting... If the child is seperated from the parent, then would the stewardess' be required to look after the child?
