Stupidly excited about this. If it goes well, this has the potential to be the ultimate superhero film (as the graphic novel is the ultimate superhero story). And they have confirmed Tom Cruise will NOT be appearing as Ozymandias, which is excellent news. Didnt want him polluting up the film.

if done properly this could be quite an astounding film... i was excited when the rumours were for the wachowskis to do it, but maybe we'll get a more interesting perspective on the story now.

Be interesting to see will the mask keep changing as was suggested in the book, or will they do a "Zaphod's second head" to it.

The success of this film rests on the casting. If they get that right, then the rest should fall into place. But nice first image. Hope Rorsharch's mask does indeed change shape

He just refuses to have anything to do with any adaptation or dilution of his work, he will do what he always does have his name removed from it and what ever royalities he would have from it divided amongst the other royality holders of the comics and charcther and stroyline rights.

It's his call and I repect him for it tbh.
Anyway more of his books are advailibe here as a result of the movies be they good bad or indifferent, it is a joy to walk into subcity and see two foot of this comics and older titles sitting there.

Simon Pegg was approached for the role of Rorschach but he turned it down. He said he didn't want to end up type cast, like Mark Hamill with Luke Skywalker. He didn't want to end up being referred to as Rorschach rather than Simon Pegg.

saw something about the image on saturaday....its my wallpaper now :D

cant wait for it.....by sounds of things, its gonna be faithfull to the amazing comic, and if its as faithfall to the comic as V for vedetta was,we're in for 1 hell of a movie
although i hear rumours the pirates sub plot will be left out.....NO!!!!!!

I'm not too sure what to make of this film. The comic was kind of meandering and didn't have too quick a pace, so and movie producers may want to butcher the script to keep the momentum. As a result I can see huge sections of the comics being removed (although hopefully the pirate bits because I thought they were sh1te).

Although I lose all respect for Snyder for this:
"Rorschach is awesome," Snyder told Wizard. "He's the man. He's too violent and so therefore people will see him and be like, 'Gosh, that's not the answer. That way is wrong.'"

Empire did a piece on the casting a while back and they picked Paddy Considine for Rorasch. I doubt anyone who has seen Dead Man's Shoes could disagree with that.

What about DR. Manhattan? Would you go for a full CG version or have a man in blue paint?

    And will he be naked?

I like that the photo shows him picking up the smily face button. The closer to the original it is, the better. But I do think the Curse of the Black Freighter (that was the name of the pirate story, wasn't it?) story has to go. Pacing will be the biggest problem facing the film even without the added weight of this sub-plot.

Well I think the only person who can play Dr Manhattan has got to be David Cross from Arrested Development :D

I was actually thinking about Ozymandias (in a who could play him kind of way, not anything dirty!!!) and the more I think about it, the more I think Tom Cruise would be good. He's pretentious and smug and that's just how I see Ozymandias.

i just clicked on this thread from my CP and i thought the above image (Humanji's) was the image from watchmen.

almost blew my top for a second.

on the premise for the film. Its already been shown that the basic stucture of the storyline (banned superheroes, ozymandias etc) is very possible to be done in film (The incredibles does have many similar plot points, except its set with golden era 50's superheroes while watchmen is much much darker cold war superheroes.)

Watchmen is a big leap for the director, 300 was a much much more visual comic so was easily adapted, while watchmen is alan moore and is steeped in story.

The sink or swim of the film is how the subplots will be handled? Which ones will be cut and which ones will be kept. How will some of them be updated since there is no longer a cold war, and using the war on terror as a base will require some shifting here and there.

I think the problem with a film of Watchmen is that it will never, ever live up to the GN in any way, shape or form. There's a perception (and I subscribe to it myself at times) that Alan Moore is God and Watchmen is his bible. The best a director can hope for is that his adaptation of the GN doesn't completely suck ass and the fans don't hang, draw and quarter him...

There was a few bits on aint it cool news about this.
Apparently the director wants to keep the pirate bits intact, I reckon they could really add the the atmosphere of the movie if handled correctly.

Nobody like the idea if David Caruso for rorscach I suppose? He could be suprising......

Apparently Tom Cruise approached Snyder about playing ozy ,Snyder has also said he is gna be as faithful as humanly possible to the book he wants The Black Freighter scenes in the film ( they will be shot like 300 ) .He also said that if the studio cut these scenes out he will put them on the DVD . I think he's up to it he wants Moore involved and is using the original draft of the script that was issued in the eighties that Moore kind of liked .He wont get involved though and in a way he's rite I don't think the narrative suites a film maybe a TV series on HBO but not a movie .

Changed the character of V a lot though. I'd be worried about the same happening here.

The Black Freighter scenes are apparently going to be added onto the extended DVD. Snyder needs to keep the gritty feel of the graphic novel and not over-exaggerate the pastel colours a la Dick Tracy. It has to be close to 3 hours long though. For my money Doug Hutchison MUST be Rorshach, and Patrick Warburton would be good for The Comedian, though Gerard Butler looks set for a role, and will probably be The Comedian, which I wouldn't complain about either.

For an idea of what I mean re casting..

    Doug Hutchison:

    Patrick Warburton:

Wasn't Terry Gilliam considering making it as a mini series back in the 80's or 90's? Now, that would have been cool!

I remember when a movie was originally mooted. Bruce Willis was in line to play the comedian and Willim Dafoe was to play 'Raw Shark'

Both good choices in my op.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 435 ✭✭The Denouncer

Whoever plays Rorschach can't be too well known because
of the whole "the end is nigh" billboard thing
if it was someone famous you'd immediately say "Hold on that's William Dafoe just walking around there"

Didnt think v or vendetta captured what the book was all about . It worked as a movie on its own though but the graphic novel is as rich as lord of the rings or something some of the minor charecters in the novel were superb .

OK Gerard Butler is definitely in it, probably The Comedian (thats my guess)
It'll be 3 hours long minimum, epic Lord of the Rings style.
Tom Cruise won't be in it.
It will be R-rated full adult comic book film
Sounds damn good. Fair play to Zack Snyder

Yeah that's why I though Doug Hutchison would be good for the part, a guy on IMDB agrees and is even in contact with his agents and sending letters left right and center to get Doug the part, he's so convinced he'll be perfect. I must admit, I think he would be too. My second choice was Brad Dourif.

Started reading the book again after seeing this and loving every minute.
Although I still think they should have given the gig to Darren Aronfsky.
