PS2 on a HDTV

I havent played my PS2 is over 2 years but decided to take it out and undust it when Final Fantasy 12 came out, I bought a gold plated rgb scart cable and connected to the rgb scart port on the back of my HDTV.
When I turned on my ps2 to play the game the picture quality was absolutely shockingly bad, the intro fmv was all pixilated like a youtube video and when the game started the flickering in the textures was so bad that it was unwatchable, everything looked really muddy and low resolution as well.
Yet if I connect the same ps2 using the same scart lead to a crappy 10 year old television, the picture quality is perfect. Has anyone come across this before, Has anyone managed to get a PS2 connected to a HDTV and received excellent picture quality on all games?

The gold plated scart cable will make **** all difference to picture quality. S-video is better, component video is better again and HDMI is best. If you manage to get component cables (I'm not sure if all PS2s support them), look for an option on your PS2 for progressive output.

Is it an LCD HDTV? LCDs give horrible pixelated pictures when used at lower than their native resolution. That's why upscaling DVD players give much better results than normal DVD players when used with a HDTV LCD screen. The picture quality output from a PS2 is terrible, you just don't really notice with old TVs as they're not that big and the picture isn't stretced as much. Also CRT does a better job with non-native resolutions than LCD.

You could try getting a thing called an Xploder off ebay. I've heard it's able to upscale PS2 games.

It's because your crappy 10 year old television is a crt and is blurring all the detail in between the pixels, it's not fixed pixel like lcd monitors nowadays. It actually requires software processing power to alias fixed pixel displays but good ol crt doe this for free. :)
