but I don't have excel installed.
When I click on the excel icon it comes up "do you want to save this file?"
Choice of either save or cancel.
When I save it, it then gives me the choice of
    open. open folder or cancel.
Then comes up "Windows cannot open this file".
Is there any way of me opening filess without having to go to the
    expense of buying it?

You could try Excel Viewer 2003, won't let you edit it though. You could get Open Office which is free, that has a spreadsheet application that will work but you might lose some formatting.
