Probably the most unprofessional radio programme ever.

Constant audio issues persisted throughout. Cutting to calls, switching microphones, this programme has had it all. The part that took the piss was talking through the adverts, and I'm almost certain that during the ads after the piece with Shane Ross, I could hear Mary Wilson saying she was stressed. Gonna listen again to that piece online when it goes up....

Well Mary wouldn't be driving the desk herself so she can't be blamed !

Stressed? Poor dear! She's only got to cope for 90 mins, minus about 30 when one takes out the news heads, ads, weather, traffic, taped material etc.

In fairness, presenting a high-profile national radio show IS stressful, irrespective of its length.

Well maybe she's stressed cos of the YTS-er behind the glass.

This programme is a fine example of what happens when RTE insist on fixing things that were never broken in the first place.

5 7 was fine and should never have been ditched.

I could have sworn I heard the studio panel eating at open mics at one point. Maybe I imagine it.

Ditto. All they had to do was move it to 4:30 and change the name. To be fair, I think Rachael English wanted out of the slot, but even so Drivetime is pure muck.

Overall I reckon that RTÉ is improving in certain areas - TV News was great for the election, RTÉ Two is much improved and the 2fm revamp made the station listenable. But when your flagship radio station churns out stuff like this it still leaves a lot to be desired.

DMC - have you got the date in question? I'll have to have a look around for it! (An approx. time for the 'stressed' bit would be great as well if you have it :D)

It was the date when I posted, so 24/05/07

    It's still online.

And click on the "listen to this show" link under the picture of Mary Wilson, and fast forward to 11m30s

Well they were certainly doing it during their Election '07 programme (you could see them eating on the web cam and hear the chewing and clanking of cutlery). Frankly I was surprised at the time as I'd have expected more of RTÉ.

As a rule, - for the sake of the studio equipment and in the interest of professionalism, food and drink should not be allowed in a radio studio (with the possible exception of sports bottles of water). That's certainly the rule in the community station I'm involved with.

Presenting a marathon live radio programme should be akin to driving a car.

The radio format should've been 3 presenters doing it, and with the exception of the first hour or two, just have 2 on the desks at any one time, and a good rotation of guests. This would allow for comfort stops and food.

On TV, Miriam O'Callaghan wasnt seen after 6pm on the Friday of the count, for some reason.

She had to go home so the nanny could have her night off.
