Societies compete for your membership and everyone gets roaring drunk.

After that everyone gets roaring drunk again.

    And again.

    And again.

    You get the idea.

as dan said its all about drinking and giving your money to societies! there are generally events run every night, in the evening things like gigs, comedy etc and at night you've got big parties by both ents and the big socs like the hist, phil and dubes (not the shoes! although might as well be! haha! :D). You'll get a weekplanner in your intropack to trinity with all the events in it.
Hope this helps! make sure you join the paintball soc! they are a great bunch of guys! :D

I do love that the Dublin university business and economic society call themselves the dubes- they really do ask for abuse sometimes. I do however like the shoes though!:D

Just to reitterate...Where does everyone drink? On campus?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 793 ✭✭✭xeduCat

There are 15,000 students here (including postgrad, part-time etc). We do not all drink in the same place. In fact, there is just one bar inside the campus*, the Pavilion ("Pav") which is small (the indoors) and popular with some people, but by no means is the central gathering place for students (except on warm days when people drink outdoors, but still you're talking about a subset). Trinity is very different in that regard to other campuses (both urban and rural) where the only bar is the on-campus bar and others are 30 mins walk away.

Do be assured, though, that if alcohol is your medicine, it is prescribed in hundreds of city centre bars within five minutes walk.

    * there is another establishment, the Lincoln Inn which is on Trinity land but operated by a tenant, with access from the street only. As it's only just re-opening, it's hard to tell whether it will be quite studenty - I doubt it and they are not marketing it as such that I can see.

Certainly not very studenty at all.
It's all plush and fancy and stuff, and the prices aren't even anywhere close to being reasonable. Pricewise think more along the lines of Café en Seine than Buttery.

Well yes. Just look at the owners: http://www.thomasreadgroup.com/

In their defence they just entered into the rental agreement with Trinity under normal business conditions, there wasn't any stipulation about price or market or anything - in this case TCD is just the landlord collecting the rent and it's up to the TRG to make their money the way they want to. (FWIW I wouldn't have done it this way but it was agreed even at tender stage to do it as a straightforward commercial arrangement).

Does the Pav have student friendly prices?

    Yep :)

I was never one for the super cheap beer, but they have some super ridiculous deal on cans of Bavaria, don't know what it is.

4 for €8 last time I checked. Hardly a super deal, but good enough considering it's 500mls of half decent (as decent as any international brand lager gets tbh) beer purchased in a licensed drinking establishment.

Dont you worry... bavaria will become your primary choice in drink soon enough... give it a week or 2 and you'll be ditchin the millers and heinekens for it!! :D I live on it!

Has any1 sampled the new mega packs? 8 for €9... deadly deal! I jus spotted it last week

Alcohol cannot be available to students(from societies) before 6pm any day. also kegs are banned completely. possibility of a bar in the marquee that will be set up in fellows square during freshers week though....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭shay_562

    also kegs are banned completely

Really? Was that in place last year, or is it new this year? 'Cause if the former, it's not enforced too strictly (gave out beers from a keg at least three nights during FW last year), and if the latter, where did you hear about it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,228 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

why are kegs banned? is there a specific reasoning behind this?

i know you cant have kegs in some places round college due to damaging floors while moving them.

Regarding kegs: it's in the college alcohol policy, which, strictly speaking is pretty much a guideline for the lack of attempt at enforcement that's used.

It basically says no kegs on what one could only presume is the basis that a college reception with a keg could be seen as a "kegger" a la american teen films.

bit ridiculous considering the fact that any society large enough to get kegs would hardly let someone do a kegstand or whatever if there's a room of 100 or more people at a reception.

And if the JD thinks that it would or even could happen, she and the rest of the panel who compiled the policy, are completely out of touch.

    policy's on the web somewhere.

also, no one, be they club/soc,etc can have a reception before 6 anytime during the year. I'm not sure if that is in the policy itself but afaik, if you seek permission for one pre six you'll get shot down.
