Eating Noises, Do they infuriate you?

    The guys on 98 fm were talking about this yesterday, apparently one of the presenters, Dermot, gets really irritated and annoyed when he hears somebody eating. I have the exact same problem, my blood boils if I hear somebody eating, so much so that I have to leave the room.
    Apparently it's pretty common and its called Hyperacusis or something, just wondering if this affects anyone else.

    Not really, it's more the voices telling me to burn things that irritates me. Oh well there's only one to shut them up. *takes out tank of petrol and lighter*

    No not really. I hate the smell of orange peel, thats makes my blood boil.

    same as myself, i cant eat in the same room of one of my family members coz a pack of lions milling into a zebra carcase would be quieter then her eating, also i cant stand people who eat with there mouth open :mad:

    I can't even stand the noises I make when eating!

    Just gonna post once, cuz I'll get annoyed thinking of all the bad eaters.
    -I hate very noisey eaters
    -Crunching loudly
    -Eating with mouth open
    -Shovelling food in
    -Smacking lips together with every bite
    -People who go 'mmm' 'oooh mmm this is delicious' .. 'chomp chomp' 'mmm '
    goddamn it say its nice and get over it!!
    -People who slurp

    the list could go on but I'll have to stop.
    Sometimes if I'm a little loud I annoy myself. Like eating prawn crackers, cant do that quietly...

    I hate people who moan non stop about how you eat/drink. Annoying as ****. the lot of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭abelard

    I don't mind people munching on Tayto or something like that as it's unavoidable really.

    However, if there is one thing that is likely to send me into psychotic rage it's people who, when eating a bowl of cereal, suck and slurp all the milk off the spoon before putting it in their mouth. I can feel my heart beat faster with rage when I just think of that noise.

    The worst is when people bite their fork or scrape it off their teeth!:mad:

    Om nom nom nom.

    Doesn't really annoy me unless they're going over the top, e.g. excessive slurping sounds. Also farting noisily while eating would be very off-putting, though I presume that's a different issue.

    I hate it when I hear people eating when I'm not, I actually feel myself getting hot and agitated while its going on. Even just thinking about it annoys me :mad:.

    Let people enjoy their food. Personally I only make noise when I eat meat, I like to go primal and make various grunts, then howl when I finish. Gotta go back to your roots sometimes

    Ditto... This is a big problem for me...

    I haven't eaten with certain family members in years because of this.

    They are like savages who just found food after a week long search...

    People who keep sucking their teeth after eating almost drives me to punching the person, most of the time I leave the room muttering "f*cking animal"...

    There's a girl who works with me who sounds like a horse when she's eating.
    Constantly chewing with her mouth open, it's especially bad when she's eating apples.
    I feel like punching her in the face... And you know what? Not a jury in the world would convict me!

    I hate it, my Mam, Dad and brother all eat like they're in a noise competition with each other:mad:

    Yes Yes oh my God Yes. That and people talking with their mouths full. I'm sure I traumatised 2 of my sisters into eating silently when they were young. I would stare at them at the dinner table and as soon as they lapsed into eating with their mouths open (even for a split second) I used to shout abuse at them. I'm sure they thank me for it now though...:o

    I can't stand it!
    It's the slurpy chewy noise that I hate, as opposed to crunching.
    But I do hate the sound of someone crunching on a bag of crisps.
    And I really hate the noise of someone eating an apple.
    I hate people chewing and talking at the same time, especially if it's about how good the food is.
    I hate looking at people eating.
    I hate it when people try to eat in the library or other quiet places and try to stifle the sounds of their chewing.
    I hate it when people gulp really loudly, but the slurping of drinks is ok.
    Slurping of food on the other hand, is horrible, as is sucking, licking, gobbling.
    Other big offenders include chicken wings, cheese falling off pizza and on to people's chins and then they have a fit about it with their mouths full, people who can't eat spagetthi properly, fajitas and bits falling out the ends of them, greedy people, overfilled sandwiches, people eating things that are too hot and then making horrible faces and noises as a result....
    AARG!

    I like to buy crunchy things to eat in the cinema. Lately snack a jacks and dry cereal have been my weapons of choice. I also slurp soup and scrape the bottom of my plate. Because of people who care about such trivial crap. Get over it, its eating. Big bloody deal.

    I only realised recently I dont like hearing people eating wraps, dunno what it is but its them in particular! Doesnt bother me enough to move away though!

    I hate people eating on a packed train, the heat is bad enough but then when you've to smell something........argh rotten!

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,864 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

    I don't mind the sound of myself eating funnily enough, but when others are eating it bugs the sh1t out of me. I have to have my headphones handy at work for when someone near me starts eating an apple or crisps or their lunch at their desk. One of the things I hate most is the quiet bit before a foilm starts in the cimena when the censors notice or sometihng is showing and all you can hear is the sounds of rattling, slurping, and popcorn/nacho eating.

    AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭Malteaser!

    Those noises drive me CRAZY!!!

    I don't normally eat with my family coz they all eat like a pack of animals.

    I even hate the noise that people make when swallowing a drink!!

    Another thing that bugs me is when people ring you up and they're in the middle of eating something...ffs like...wait five minutes until you've finished or if it's really important put down the fork while you're talking. If anyone rings me while they're eating something I just tell them to ring me back when they're finished.

    There's something about that noise that just makes my skin crawl.

    I don't mind it as long as they are not overtly noisy/talk when eating/chew with mouth open etc, i.e. comply with basic manners.

    HOWEVER, if I'm going out with someone or someone I love is really annoying me, hearing them eat makes me want to vomit on my own face quite frankly. Don't know why that is. Oh, and if I hear someone slurp a drink it makes me want to curse them and hope that all their offspring be born without tongues.

    When people make normal eating noises I don't mind it, but if someone is eating with their mouth open or smacking, that absolutely disgusts me.

    This is one of the few things in the world that will immediately make my blood boil, and significantly decrease my opinion of the slack-jawed mouth-breathing idiot involved. Jesus, it's one of the most basic manners that your mammy (should have) taught you. It's one thing making some crunching noises when you're eating crisps or whatever (unavoidable), but chomping away with your fat, idiot maw wide open like a horse when you're eating is inexcusable. :mad:
    Let people enjoy their food

    Grand, as long as they can enjoy it with their damn mouth closed like the rest of us! Let everyone else enjoy our peace and quiet.
    Miss Fluff wrote: »

    Haha, I'd love to be able to vomit at will, so I could vomit all over the faces of people who chomp and slurp with their mouth open :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 rob185

    I have exactly the same problem!! I thought i was crazy to be so pissed off by the sound of eating. Even when people chew with their mouths closed it sends me mad. I've had many arguments because of it within the family!! And i've also walked out of the room full of muchers muttering the "f**ckin animals" line.

    I dont even know what it is that bothers me about it...

    Probably the fact that every civilized adult should know better, that it's so easy to avoid (just keep your damn lips shut, no large amount of skill necessary), and that it sounds so disgusting. Anyone who does it is a filthy, lazy savage who I hope dies in a plane crash over warm seas, so they'd be kept alive for days until they died of thirst or were eaten by sharks.

    The only two things that infuriate me are when people are late, and this shítty internet connection, keeps disconnecting every 2 bloody mins!!! >:(

    Anywho, in Japan, slurping when eating noodles is a sign of respect for the person who cooked the meal...

    Dunno if thats what i have anyway....judging from Wiki the causes include, but are not limited to:
    Wiki wrote:
    * Severe head trauma
    * Facial nerve dysfunction
    * Surgery
    * Ear irrigation
    * TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder)
    * Adverse drug reaction
    * Williams Syndrome
    * Autism
    * Bell's palsy
    * Ménière's disease
    * Asperger syndrome
    * Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome
    * Chronic ear infections
    * Minor Head Injury
    * A vestibular disorder

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperacusis
    I'm almost certain it isnt all the minor head injuries i get that cause my hatred of that noise and i dont have any of the rest(arguable)...:eek:

    Anyone who does it is a filthy, lazy savage who I hope dies in a plane crash over warm seas, so they'd be kept alive for days until they died of thirst or were eaten by sharks.

    Slurping of any kind will actually cause the aul red mist to rise and I have to leave the company of someone who is doing this, as it makes me feel so sick my fingers start twitching involuntarily, as they imagine themselves wrapping round the throat of said offender.
    I don't mind crunching of crisps, as it's pretty much unavoidable, although it still irritates me when I eat crisps and i can hear myself crunching them.
    Chewing with your mouth open - arrrrrrrrrgh! close your mouth you goddamn savage fool. I really don't need to see your mastication process and all the strings of saliva globbing from your pallette to your half-chewed food. Bleurgh.
    And woe betide if anyone gulps their drink in a greedy noisy disgusting fashion, I have to walk out of the room to stop myself from punching them in their stupid gluttonous throat.

    I am actually at the point where even if it's one of my dogs slurping or making lovely loud smacking noises when licking themselves I will have toput them outside the room so I won't throttle them.

    Having said that, pretty much most things that other humans do annoys me, so why I get so worked up about this thing in particular baffles me.

    I live in China and a bowl of light broth/soup is served with every meal (Nortern China it is consumed after the meal, Southern China during, all dependent on custom really) but to not SLURP IT LOUDLY is a sign that you have not enjoyed your meal.

    Footnote: likewise with finishing a dish. Don't EVER finish a dish or your host will think you have not had enough. Like my friend last week with a ghastly hangover who indulged in dumplings with aplomb only to be served "seven day old pigeon as a treat" Vom-a-bloody-rama.

    Yes, he puked.

    Badly.:eek:

    Preferably in some restaurant populated by mouthbreathers slobbering on their food, purely for the entertainment value of having to explain to a judge why we went on a murder-spree with forks :)

    No I'll admit, It is very rude to comment while someone is trying to eat, but I cant help myself. It's either say something or punch em straight on the nose. I once told a friend she sounded like a "pig sifting through slops", needless to say she wasn't impressed.

    I hate hearing people eating, doesn't matter what kind of eater they are (slurper, heavy-breather or snappy chewer etc.) I have to have background noise (pretty loud) when eating with friends and often have to leave the room (excuse myself) even when eating at home with family as it drives me up the fkn wall! So glad it's not just me! Ever hear someone breathing realy heavily through their MOUTH when eating, it's HORRIBLE!!

    Also hate heavy breathers! :mad:
