Computer Questions, not as many replies..

Just something I noticed. Like the last time I bought a new laptop (2 years ago), I've ended up asking a million questions in the computers forum about different issues etc on the new laptop. Only last time there seemed to be far more replies and activity in each thread. I'm guessing the lack of activity is due to the fact the forum has been split into different sections, or else people are just sick of all the questions :o

And interestingly, even though there would be far more threads filling up the computers forum, thus pushing threads back to the 2nd and subsequent pages more often, my threads still managed to get a lot more activity 2 years ago. Anyway, just thought I'd point it out.

Although Almighty Cushion still manages to pop up and help me in nearly every thread the bleedin weirdo :p

Not sure if you're serious but I was joking (note the :p, ;)) and I'm very grateful for all the help he's given me, I wouldn't even have the laptop if not for him helping me so much. :)

Or maybe people are posting everything in Comp & Tech and not in the correct forum?
That aside, I was active around 'Tech' around the time you were going through your questions phase - I think I tried to answer a few of your questions; you posted more questions than average, I'd say.
Comp & Tech is the AH of Tech - those poor bastards.

+1 on that. Thing is even though there are dedicated forums, things still get messy like you can get iTunes questions in Comp&Tech (for the windows users) and in Mac for the Macheads, as well as iPod questions in PMP (usualy PC-heads there again) and the Mac-heads tend to come directly to Mac. I reckon the amount of questions/answers are the same, they are just ending up in various forums now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Yeah I remember you were helpful too Karoma, thanks :) and I did indeed ask more questions than average, just don't wander into the motors forum if you think I was bad in tech with questions :o

I do think a lot of questions can fit into many forums as 440 says so they are kind of scattered around and each forum would have a different set of regulars who may be able to help a thread just as well in another forum but never venture in there. I think before it was that they all congregated in the one forum so threads were answered by more folk.

Still have access to laptops, whoo :D

I respond to quite a lot of threads in B&U, Graphics and occasionally laptops (when it's actually graphics related), but I actually never even read Comp&Tech...:D

Maybe the figures will say otherwise but I too think the auld computer forums don't get as much traffic as they used too. When they were moved far right
    > they seemed to loose alot of steam and then they got sub divided they seemed to loose steam again.

Is that the case? Is it just that people are better informed and know how to google?!

One of these things. Don't think about getting one though as you need a degree to run one and a licence to own it.

    Banned from laptops.

How in Thors name are us Mods to be taken seriously with such an obvious abuse of power!?
I vote AC for demoddation. All users will be glad to know it's a long and painful process.

Regi looks particularly tired and aged in that pic btw, taking care of Boards servers has really taken it's toll on him.

I know personally I used to read and post a lot more when it was only comp & tech and a few more specialised forums. I thought it worked a lot better as one general forum to deal with nearly everything, with a few off-shoots to cater for the more technically detailed aspects. It's not that there's anything really wrong with the current way, I think it's just a personal preference of my mine, the old comp forum was a bit like a pick and mix, a little bit of everything from one thread to the next. Maybe everyone else feels different, I just thought I'd throw it out there.

    Yeah I hear that.
It's gotten so granular around here that today I actually had to use google to find the motors forum.
Can't you guys put the inactive crap forums into their own little drop-down instead of us having to wade through them to find the good ones?
Thank God for the 'Subbed' drop-down menu, that's all I can say.

Does an inactive forum ever get closed?

    Yes, they do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

Yes there has been a drop off in traffic in the Comp/Tech forum. It used to have the second highest number of posts (after AH), but has now dropped to fourth.

I feel this is due to the Tech category being further subdivided. Posts that would have been posted in the Tech/Comp are now posted in say Building & Upgrading, Computer Health, Laptops, etc.

I'd be interested to see how the stats for the Tech category as a whole look, before and after the subdivision of forums, and see if the post rate has remained the same.

One possible effect of sub dividing is that people might only look at one or two forums, rather than across all the forums. That's something I've found myself. I used to read Broadband, laptop, net comms quite regularly. But now I think there's just too many forums under Tech to be able to commit myself to read them all.

I find the users of all the Tech forums really helpful. Any time I've a question, somebody is always willing to help out, and they're nearly always right.

Maybe the quantities of replies has dropped, but I usually find the first few posts have the answer anyway.

Agreed with irlrobins, I used to post often in the Comp/Tech forum but hard to keep up with things these days with them being diluted. *gets cane* I need an upgrade please Vexorg.

the oul tech forum just aint what she used to be aint what she used to be aint what she used to be :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,499 ✭✭✭Sabre0001

I got a poor uptake on my thread (but that was probably because it was a very unusual request and a bit baffling! :) ).

Comp & Tech does seem to get less of a look over - I only go in to ask a Q or if I see a topic on the main page that I could help with // am interested in...

personally im just bored of the threads where people ask you to do their computer shopping for you. also if someone already posts the answer i was going to give I wont bother. Then other times you just dont have the foggiest clue, or its not your area of expertise.

I've asked a few questions in the past six months or so and always found the users to a friendly, knowledgeable bunch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,848 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Those who reply always seem to be knowledgeable and friendly indeed, but there's just nowhere near as many replies so you don't get as much input thus reaching that point of solving the issue for more complicated issues.

This thread today seems to be an exception to that then: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055320961

seriously though if you help us help you we can help you so much better.

There is a couple of reasons and it is pretty much the same thing that happens with communities over time.

    1. Question fatigue.
Odds on it may of already been asked. People don't like repeating themselves.

    2. Do your homework.
If you say you have done some level of investigation your more likely to get the interest of the geeks.

    3. Use an interesting subject line.

Comt & Tech is also a pretty busy forum. It's pretty easy for an unanswered question to drop from page 1 in under a few of hours and once that happens you can consider it almost gone for good.

I'd love to see a way of tagging threads where the OP had received an answer to provide an easy visual way of seeing where help was needed and somehow pushing them down so that other threads, still looking for help, would be moved up.

Its also possible that since the OP has been reading and learning more about laptops, his questions may be those of an informed amateur rather then a "n00b", hence few people feeling able to give a good answer.

In terms of posts, we had an average of just shy of 10k a week here in Jan, its not 13k+ a week in June so the site is getting busier, we have just spread it out more now...

    DeV.

Yeah, the questions I've been asking have been getting trickier/less known/specialised in the past months/years I suppose which could be a big part of it, but I still reckon they threads are getting less views no matter how eye catching and clickable the subject makes the thread sound :p
