Audio Interface - USB or Firewire?

    Hi,

I thought I saw a thread on this before but I just can't find it now. I have a new MacBook with only one FW400 port and 2 USB ports. I want to buy an Audio Interface for it and assumed that FW would be the way to go. But I can get some USB AI's for a bit cheaper plus my firewire will be used up by an external HDD.

So, will my USB port cause any latency issues or should I really get myself a FW hub and get a FW AI to plug in to it along with my HDD?

Your experience and advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

thanks for that. I'll open my search to USB AI's now.

Hadn't thought of daisy chaining. Good thinking.

    How are things?

I'd have a good long hard think before you buy and research to death anything that you seriously consider before you part with your hard earned cash.

I've a Mac Pro - and am currently in the process of getting a new AI.

I bought a Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1 - 24/192 which is a great card (if you have a PC or Laptop - They ****ing hate Mac's!!)

Its powered by USB 2.0. Mac's for some reason have a power issue on their USB ports. USB 2.0 spec is 500ma voltage. Mac's do not give this amount constantly - and as a result the device keeps / kept disconnecting.

Have a look on the net for reviews and forums with users problems. Type in "Problems with soundcard XXXXX and MB/MBP or Mac XX" and you'll see everything you need.

I know MB's or MBP's have an issue with the USB port closest to the screen(??). If you look on the net , the problem is there with any device (video camera / printer etc.. ) which is powered by the USB port on Mac's. Its not the fault of the device - but of Apple.

What has proven to be a real time waster for me is that anything that you buy will say that it is compatible with OSX 10.4.8 or higher etc.. OK - thats a given.. but the real compatibility issue is with the Hardware. These companies will only cut themselves out of the loop by fessing up and admitting that their product will not work correctly with a particular Mac.

IMO you have got 2 choices.

    1. Firewire = the best - buy a FW Audio Interface & make sure that it is self powered.

    2. If you must - Get a USB Audio Interface - but again - make sure that it is not reliant on the bus for its power.

Self powered via a seperate power supply all the way.

Do your research well before you buy.. The information you need to make the best choice is out there.

There is nothing worse than having to become a Tech head because this thing you have spent €€€'s on doesnt work. Leaves no time for the Music. :(

I agree with this post - Also most Firewire Devices I've seen 2 ports so you can daisy chain your drive. Great when you only have the one on your Mac.

The big advantage of Firewire I think is when you need to shoot around a load of tracks individually. i.e. if you need to get multi mics in and multitrack out on separate out puts (going to your summing box, Mixer, separate Headphone Mix, Auxs for FX)

Usually a Firewire Interface will give you more options...
