Strange DVD drive problem...very strange!

My uncle called me up to have a look at his machine the other day which has two disk drives. The DVD/RW drive is the one with the problem. Every month or so he would back up some of his files onto this DVD, but for some reason now the DVD drive isn't even recognising the disk in the machine anymore. There is nothing wrong with the disk as i have tried it in the other drive. And its not a drive problem as other disks work in it.

I have tried a number of solutions none have worked, such as

    - using a cd-drive cleaner
    - uninstalling the drive from the machine and booting the machine up again to install it

Anyone any ideas? I can't figure out what could be wrong..

    Cheers,

Have you tried updating the drives firmware? Worth a shot ;)

Had this problem once, never did get it fixed. Ended up replacing the drive.

Sounds like its day is done. They're not that expensive. You'll get a good one online for less than €30.

Yeah i've tried that too...currently running the most up-to-date firmware.

Like its a Dell Machine, only a year or two old and it was pretty expensive. Can't remember the exact model but it was top of the line anyway.

Its so weird i don't know what could be wrong...
Why will it play some disks and not others?

I have had the same problem with every drive I have ever owned - 95% of discs work, but there's that 5% of (blank media) discs that the drive won't read or write.

Probably the drive is broke or doesn't like the discs, I got a Pioneer DVD burner recently and its pritty good, a 115D model, mite be worth getting another drive,
