www.irishfuelprices.com is up for sale... sad really.

If it's old news please delete.

Nope, that's a recent enough development. The owners were getting too much hassle from companies giving them an ear bashing when the wrong prices were put up by the public. Same companies wouldn't bother paying to have the correct prices confirmed. Typical!

No point offering a public service if all you get is grief. It was a great service though...

    Hi Zakrze,

I am in the process of buying a house. Well I just put in the bid yesterday afternoon. Loved the house but but only had 1 issue. It's heated by oil. The oil tanker is out the backyard.

I've personally never seen or been in a house that has this. My parents and friends houses are all gas and every house I've viewed over the past 4 months has also been gas heated.

I'm basically wondering if oil is ok? How do you go about filling it up, how many times a year roughly would it need to be filled, cost, effecfiency etc...? I really am a newbe to oil heating and I really really like the house and this was my only issue with it, so I just want to get a little more informed about it.

    Thanks,
    Villa82

LPG works out more expensive than oil. Hope you are getting a BER cert with the house you are buying. If its "G" rated don't buy it.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure it is has a BER Cert. I am going back to view it tonight so am trying to build a list of as many questions as possible now before any pen gets put to paper. This will certainly be on my Q list.

Someone did mention that it's not a huge deal getting it changed from oil to gas but to do that you would need gas in the area already. Is it just a case of ringing Bord Gais giving them the name of the area and they can tell is there is gas already being supplied to other houses in the estate.

LPG = Liquefied petroleum gas is stored in a tank in your back garden and a guy in a truck delivers it. "Natural gas" from Bord Gais comes thru a pipe into your home but only certain areas, housing estates, town centres etc. have it. Natural gas is a good bit cheaper per kwh than oil currently

The house would more than likely be using "Natural Gas " if it was available.

see the pdfs below. Delivered Energy Cost cent/kwh is the important figure. Oil is 8.9 cent per kilowatt and Natural Gas is 5.2 cent per kilowatt but LPG is 12.0 cent per kilowatt. Get the idea. The boiler efficiency also effects the cost.

One good thing coming from the financial market craziness is that the price of oil has dropped down past $92 a barrel

When might we see cheaper home heating oil???? Might be a good time to top up soon?

In the last three weeks oil prices have dropped by around $20 a barrel yet the oil companies where I live only seemed to have dropped their prices by 1c per litre in that period and in some cases there have been no reductions.

Last December I filled up around 1200 litres at 69c (inc vat) per litre - at that time oil prices were around $90 per barrel. Today I have been quoted 79c (inc vat) per litre and oil prices are at $92. How can $2 difference equate to 10c difference per litre  ?

Heating oil companies are quick enough to put up their prices when oil shoots up but when it drops they take a good while to reduce them.

    Welcome to Ireland

The same can be said for petrol prices that shoot up when th eprice of a barrel of oil rises but why are we still paying the same prices per litre now that oil has fallen by $50 a barrel? Excuses like it takes a while for the fluctuations to feed through to the pumps is crap seeing as the prices rise as soon as the cost of a barrel does.

Don't expect the government to raise the issue either as they're making more on tax when the price of petrol is high.

Apologies for the late response. They don't have a BER cert. Said they don't need one until Jan 09. Said only houses being sold after end of this year do need that. It was been suryved by the ebs and also a personal friend so they are happy with it. Just waiting on their cert of compliance for the attic conversation.

so the price of heating oil has been falling a bit lately.
Is it worth filling up now - before the budget?
Or waiting a while to see if it comes down further?
