Dublin to Kilkee on a Friday afternoon

Just wondering what people think of the different possiblities of getting to Kilkee, Co. Clare on a Friday afternoon from Dublin, leaving around midday.

The AA show the following options.

Through Limerick city center potentially at a bad time
    4hr 12 min & 281 km

    Via Kilaloe
    4hr 28 min and 292 km

Tarbert, Co. Kerry and the cross ferry
    4hr 24 min and 281 km
Limerick bypass means no City Center, just have to get onto the N69 (is that difficult?)

We are not in a huge
rush, but don't want to sit in the car in heavy traffic either.

I'm inclined to go the route of the ferry, just because its different.

Ok, if you want to go by Tarbert, take the N7 and then the southern ring road. Take the first left off the roudabout, then take the N20 as far as the first slip road (dooradoyle) and follow directions for dooradoyle/crescent shopping centre. Should be straightforward from Crescent SC onwards.

if you can get out of Dublin early you should be ok to go through limerick city centre. You can skirt around the city centre and onto the Ennis dual carriageway.
Once you get out of Limerick it probably about an hour and a quarter to Kilkee with the ennis Bypass. If you're running late I'd go for the Killaloe option. I'm not sure if taking the Tarbert ferry is any real advantage.

As a person who drives from Dublin to West Clare most Fridays I would avoid Limierick city at all costs. Even at 9 pm at night it can take 45 mins to an hour sometimes. My route is to take the road to Broadford at Birdhill and continue onto Ennis through O'Callaghan's Mills, around the Ennis Bypass and then onto Kilkee. It's not a particularly good quality road, but one I personally would be familiar with. The Birdhill to Killaloe thru Tuamgraney to Ennis is a better road, if slightly longer. If you leave at midday, you should be in Kilkee for 4 at the latest

I would not recommend the ferry route as it is possible to be waiting half an hour for a ferry at times.
