First of all, eligibility for a British passport, is accessed under the criteria of the British Nationality Act. This specifies that for all people born outside the UK before the 1st of January 1983, that eligibility may only be claimed through your father's lineage, and not your mothers.

If you were born outside the United Kingdom after 7 February 1961 but before 1 January 1983, mother born in the United Kingdom- you may be entitled to a British passport, but must first register a British citizen information here.

If you yourself were born in the UK after 1.1.83- citizenship, and subsequent entitlement to a passport will only be normally granted if either of your parents are British nationals.

Residents born in the 6 counties may apply to hold either a British or Irish passport (or both), and dual nationality is formally recognised by both British and Irish authorities for anyone in this position.
