They will have to announce the press conference first, though.

Thread title implies it's been confirmed by Apple. It hasn't. It's been "confirmed" by a nameless individual. While the date makes sense, if recent rumours are to be believed, this is no more a confirmation than any other (of the 100s) rumour.

ah cremo :(, don't be the guy who feels he is 'in the know' but can't say, but instead of just not saying, posts on an internet forum, letting people know he is in the know, but isn't saying. don't be that guy, there are already 1000s of them out there, most of whom are just pretending. If you know what I mean.

For everyone else, iphone with 3G announced on the 9th, in O2 stores on the 18th. Tariffs and plans stay the same, but phone cost will be subsidised.

Of course if I was really 'in the know' I would just say nothing...

i presume it will be easy to unlock like the current iphone?

any thing different besides the 3g

    still 2mp camera?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

apple have been keeping stum about what camera arrangement they are going to use.

be it a upgraded camera with flash
or same camera on the back, with a front facing camera for video calls

i'd imagine it will be one or the other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,431 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    Same camera I'd say.

n95 still beats it then. the video quality on the n95 is excellent, if they upgraded the camera i might get one

I wouldn't be surprised to see the same camera, If they do bump it up expect nothing more than 3.2mp. As for flash, I don't think there's any hope of that.

Christ, do people still buy phones for cameras?

Yep. A good camera was one of the most important things in my consideration when looking for a new phone recently. Is that really shocking? :pac:

you cant carry a proper camera everywhere, where a phone with a decent camera can save this. Its not expert quality no one say it is, but the difference between the N95 and the iphone camera is worlds apart. Always handy to have a camera with you, thinking of all the car crashes alone that the phone came in handy to take some pics. In short YES.

    most pointless thing ever.

anywho - i'd like to see a good GPS, 3mp camera with a flash, would radio be asking for to much? would be very handy.

Radio; too much to ask for? Yes, Jobs hates radio. Apple only grudgingly supplied a radio receiver with the current remote control for iPods. No iPod has ever shipped with one included.

Yeah, but even the N95 can't beat my Ixus 70, which I carry everywhere.
If I want to even snap a quick photo of something, the quality off any camera phone - even the N95 isn't good enough!

I think for MOST people though, given the choice of carrying around a separate digital camera to take quality shots everywhere they go or having an integrated 3-5mpx camera in their phone for decent, functional shots they'd take the latter.
A lesser number, those into photogaphy (presumably yourself) will obviously take the former.

video calls are huge in japan. where 3G is like GSM here.

3g is the standard, not something that works intermittently

dont they have an improvement on 3g aswell?

yeh 3g is standard over there no matter where you go.

it was released in 2001 over in japan so they've had a good 5 year head start on ireland.

well this is what i was hinting at for the last few weeks.

softbank have confirmed to be the carrier of the iphone in japan. this confirms that a 3G iphone exists due to softbank being a WCDMA carrier and makes that june 9 annoucement very likely to be about the 3g iphone.

I don't get why the 3G iphone is being drooled over so much. I'm not sure, but I would suspect that most of Ireland doesn't have 3G coverage. Surely this makes having a 3G phone moot.

This is typical Apple maneuvering - whip everyone up into a frenzy and make them think they have to have one of these. And, bizarrely enough, they can do it without actually saying anything!

And it bloody works to, I have one of those bloody iphone thingies. :)

Still can't see the mad need for a 3G one though, I mainly use the wifi in mine for web stuff.

Wifi is grand if you have access to it all the time when out and about (or don't leave the house:p). Other than that 3G is a must for emails, messenger and other stuff when wifi isn't available. I'd have an iPhone ages ago, if it had 3G and a decent camera, but I'm with 3 so I can only use a 3G phone on their network.

    I disagree. :D

I use my iPhone for e-mails and EDGE is fine for me. I also browse Boards.ie on the train each morning and on the mobile theme, it flies along. Even with a regular theme, it is usable. I also found browsing Boards.ie using a 3G card on the train much more sporadic than using the mobile theme on my iPhone. The speeds on the iPhone were much more consistent.

The only real omission as far as I am concerned is an FM radio. I don't do photos and I have no need for gps.

Having said that, if the 3G iPhone lives up to the hype, keep an eye out on Adverts.ie for my current iPhone. :)

Of course I was disagreeing with the need for a 3G signal for emails, not disagreeing with your being on the 3 network. :)

Can you imagine 3 Customer Support with an iPhone?

ohh there's no doubt there is one on the way, but until now it was a question of when...

i posted eariler on the thread saying "if only you guys knew".

i've known about this softbank deal for the last 3 or so weeks as i work for one of their suppliers.

there was no solid confirmation (sure there are rumours about) that an 3g iphone apart from accessory manufacturers getting the design dimensions. softbank announcing that they've got an iphone coming is the only solid proof that one is coming and when it's coming, and judging how fast it was from other operators announcing the iphone on their network and to actually having it for sale means this is going to happen sooner rather than later.

But how prevalent is 3G coverage in Ireland? I just had a quick look at coverage maps of a few of the providers and it doesn't seem to be available in many places at all.
I assume that if I bought a 3G phone (be it an iphone or other) and I live somewhere without 3G coverage, it'll only run at edge speeds anyway?

    Mr Bloat wrote: »

    from the 3 website:
3G video service area which covers 87% of the population and a national voice and text service area (2G/2.5G) that covers 99.5% of the population.

looking at there map you wouldnt think its 87%

Yeah, that's one of the maps I looked at. The other ones have even worse coverage. so, unless the new iphone has lots of other great features, it won't be a great leap over the existing one?

no one knows the features, as no one has seen them except jobs and his minions.

all we can do is speculate what an iphone can do with 3G speeds.
