    From eastside boxing.

    Do You believe it?
    http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=15992&more=1

By Floyd Mayweather Jr.: "It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport..

"I have said numerous times and after several of my fights over the past two years that I might not fight again. At the same time, I loved competing and winning and also wanted to continue my career for the fans, knowing they were there for me and enjoyed watching me fight. However, after many sleepless nights and intense soul-searching I realized I could no longer base my decision on anything but my own personal happiness, which I no longer could find. So I have finally made up my mind, spoken to my family, particularly my mother, and made my decision."

"I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead, including the one right around the corner. But there comes a time when money doesn't matter. I just can't do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time.

"Finally, I want to personally thank all of my fans for their loyalty and dedication as my career comes to a close. I always believed that their enthusiasm and support helped carry me to victory with every fight I ever had.

"It was a great joy to have fought for all of you. Now I hope you understand my decision and wish me well with the rest of my life."

I won't be in the least bit surprised if he makes a comeback. If he is true to his word, i think this will bother Hatton. As i get the impression he is desperate to try and avenge his loss to Mayweather.

Although I cant help but think that both camps had chats and decided a sequel wouldnt be worth it. DLH will take a different opponent and Mayweather will retire until Cotto calls him out after another victory or two. As for Hatton avengin his loss, all i can see him doing is helping Mayweather warm up for Cotto.

Does this increase the chances of Cotto - DLH?

I'd say he's probably gone for good this time unless he gets a really large payday. He's made his money in boxing and probably doesn't want to be punch-drunk when he gets out of boxing. He's been an elusive boxer, so he can live a healthy life if he gets out now.

He could invest his money into property to ensure to stays wealthy for a long time. I wish him all the best if he does retire. He's been one of the greatest boxers in a long time.

Yes, i think he has done Hatton a favour in a way. Hatton could go to bits losing twice to Mayweather. A Cotto v peak DLH would have been good but now i only see one winner.

It appears to be the latter.

im surprised. he was making easy money by fighting de la hoya. at least this saves us two unnecessary rematches. in a year or so i could see him coming back to fight cotto. by that time cotto will be huge and it would cement floyd`s legacy. on the other hand maybe not his promotional company is growing at the moment. recently they promoted concerts for beyonce and jay-z i think so maybe it really is the last we have seen of him in the ring

I read an article tonight which said he is set to sign with UFC. Dana White is making a big announcement on Thursday. I really doubt it's about Mayweather, though. Still, stranger things have happened.

i heard that too. for floyd to sign they would need to make him a huge offer. for the biggest fights i dont think their top earners make more than a million, and for floyd to leave boxing and 20+ million fight with de la hoya it must be a huge offer so for that reason im not inclined to believe it. i think he will stick to promoting. he also supposed to have an energy drink coming out and he is talking about a part in a film. he may come back in time to fight cotto. i dont think he could take people saying he ducked him and that overshadow what he actually achieved in his career

The site that reported that Mayweather is signing with the UFC is a non-credible pro wrestling site, so I wouldn't read too much into it

In fairness to Mayweather he said immediately after the Hatton fight at the inring interview that he was not fighting again. There are a lot of money men around him who don't want him to retire.
A lot of people don't seem to understand this. They will be trying their very best for a number of years to come to get him back in the ring.

The guy is smart though. He is unbeaten, has beaten the best and I think he realises that Cotto could be one fight too much. As things stand he is retiring as an undefeated champion. Fair play to him. I rate him the best I have ever seen. He was annoying and frustrating to watch at times but he was just a class apart.

I just hope he sticks to the retirement and does not lose his earnings and have to get back in for financial reasons as has happened to so many boxers over the years. I don't think thats likely to happen to him though.

personally, when read that story , my first thought was that it should be reserved for the "snip-bit" section on the sporting pages.

I dont think anybody believes it for one second.

I do however feel that they now realise Floyd v DelaHoya II is only going to tarnish reputations...
a fixed up fight that serves no interest in the progression of the sport.

Its a way out of the rematch with Oscar.

He'll be back for a Cotto match within a year, Its Cotto that's stealing all the limelight at the moment.

And also remember that Cotto is advancing in ratings with the quality of opponents he has faced , is facing and is lined up to face in the future.
Compared to Floyd , they move at 2 different speeds.

    Do You believe it?

    No.

He'll be back, whether it's in a few months or years, he'll definitely fight again.

Yea I think he'll be back too. The next year will see the Welterweight division being cleaned up a bit - Cotto Vs Margarito - the winner of which could probably face Williams now after him beating Quintana in the rematch, or else De La Hoya first. Once all that's been sorted out and you have a true Welterweight undisputed champion, Mayweather could be tempted back for 1 last massive payday.

Then again, he really doesn't need the money...

So, do you think Cotto will take the P4P slot if he beats Margarito ?

Mayweather would have to face the best to hold it in my opinion...... theres a few welters that i'd like to see him face! Its a thriving division , isnt it ?

I think the division needs to be cleaned up, but I think Cotto can do it. Maybe in a years time if he's beaten Margarito, Williams, and whoever else, he will be the undisputed No. 1 in the division, at which point the money would be right for a fight with Mayweather, plus he always bangs on about his 'legacy', so if he really meant it he'd have to take that fight.
