How to convert songs ripped from cd's to mp3?

Right, I know how to convert songs to mp3 when I am ripping them off a cd (I went to preferences and changed the importing to 'mp3 encoder'), but I don't know how to convert songs I already have in itunes that I have got fromt cd's in the past to mp3. When i right click on a song the option 'convert selection to mp3' appears- but when i click this and go to make an mp3 cd it still won't burn the songs ripped from cd's. It is very annoying as a huge amount of my songs come from ripping cd's before I had changed the import format. So when I go to make an mp3 cd most songs cannot go onto it as it says they are not mp3 files. Surely there is a solution to this other than me having to start re-ripping all the songs again? Cheers.;)

Cheers. I downloaded the Freerip as it is free, and have it open now, but what do I do next? How do I get the songs from my i-tunes that I was to convert into the file? Do I have to put them on data cd's and rip them again or is there a quicker way? Thanks

um, Windows Media Player does this already. Just go to the options, and in the RIP tab change your setting from WMA to MP3

I don't use Windows Media Player, only I-tunes, and I have already changed the format to mp3 and all future cd's I rip will be done by mp3 but I need to know how to change the existing songs to mp3 format. On the free rip it does'nt seem to enable me to actually find the tracks that I ripped from cd's in the past, only songs I have downloaded, and they are already mp3.

dbpoweramp all the way. That is if you can still find a freeware and not shareware version.

Goldwave is another great tool, which has many nifty audio utilities, including changing file formats. Fully functional trial download.

In FreeRip select the converter mode then browse to the folder where your tracks are stored, then slecect rip to mp3. You should first go into the configuration options to select the bitrate and also the output location.

What format are these tracks that aren't MP3? M4A/AAC?

Don't forget to take into account that every time you convert between lossy formats (mp3, aac, wma, ogg, real etc.) you are losing a significant amount of quality and there's no way of getting that back. If you don't want to lose quality rip the original CDs again to your preferred format, or rip them to a lossless format first (flac, Apple Lossless etc) so you can convert them to any format in the future without loss (of course lossless formats don't compress as much).
