At 9am this morning it was announced that our building, which has approx. 200 people working in it has no water.

This means we cant use the toilets, water coolers or kitchens.

I thought that it was illegal to keep people in an unserviced building and need to send us home.

is this correct or am just looking for a hald day?

I imagine they are required to provide toilet facilities (though they don't necessarily have to be in your building). I see no obligation on them to provide a kitchen or a water cooler though.

I suspect you are just looking for a half day! :)

Has your employer bought bottled water for the kitchen?

Interesting irishbird- do you happen to work in a certain building in Sandyford by any chance?

Yes health and safety regulation says that you can't work in a building with no running water- it's to do with inability to flush the toilets.

No and no air conditioning either, so the place is like an oven

Wow, that's cool. The water in our office has been down a few times and I never even thought of going home!

Tbh, I think I'd stay and work...

SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELFARE AT WORK (MISCELLANEOUS WELFARE PROVISIONS) REGULATIONS, 1995.

    5. It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure that an adequate supply of wholesome drinking water is provided and maintained at suitable points conveniently accessible to all employed persons.

Can't see how you can work without water.

Well I think it's pretty easy to work without water, but going to the toilet might be a problem. :)

OP: Is it a temporary problem, i.e. a plumber is working on it now, or do they not know what the situation is?

I think it would be reasonable to stay in work if the problem is currently being fixed.

You could always hover over your Managers bin...

The last time the water was out in my office, I walked into the toilets and one of my colleagues was taking a dump in the urinal. The weirdest part was when he asked me to get him toilet roll.:confused:

    Note: may not be true.

Well make a big deal of it, and go home for a paid day off.
Or just work for the day as normal and don't piss your boss off by asking for the day off like a child.

Its completely to do with fire precautions. If there's no water, the fire-fighting equipment wont work and you'll all fry. Also toilets are required to be full of water or not deemed suitable for use.
