The post about a volvo owners meeting got me thinking, since it mentions some relatively new volvo models.
So, are there any owners of older saabs on this forum who would be interesting in organising a meetup? There is no branch of the saab owners club in Ireland, maybe some of the owners of older saabs attend other classic car meetings, but a saab get together would be good I think.
So - any interest? This post will probably vanish without a trace, but sure might as well try.

A friend of mine has about 10 of them going back to the 70's, I'll tell him about it if you plan anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,512 ✭✭✭Gerry

Cool, if just a few people posted I'd organise something alright. I have a classic shape 900 turbo, and know of at least 2 people with 900's and 99's who'd be interested, they don't post here though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 179 ✭✭opeldave

Im a saab lover & always wanted a nice black99 turbo with the red interior
I only ever had a dark green manual 1992 9000 2.3 full pressure turbo CS.
so very sorry I sold it:( :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
it was my favourite car ever & ive had a few other supposed performance cars-cossie-scooby turbo-gtis-sir-...
erm I know a few lads with 900s & 99s tucked away in barns & garages so ill fill them in for you if your having a meet-up or starting a webpage;)

    all the best
    dave

Cheers, I wonder if these cars tucked away are still roadworthy though. If not, are they for sale? :) If you want to become an owner, theres plenty of 900 turbos going in england. 1500 - 2000 pounds would get you a nice late one with all the trimmings, vrt is 400 euro.
Anyone else? There was a thread about the classic 900 on this forum a few months back, maybe some of the people on that thread will see this one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 179 ✭✭opeldave

i dont know if half of them are roadworthy or for sale but its always worth asking!:D id rather find one this side of the water if possible;)

    Hi,

Not sure if this is too old but did this ever go anywhere?

I've an 84 Saab 99 which in reasonable nick but I'm trying to fix up little bits and pieces and would be interested if there were others who knew anything about them as I'm totally new to this whole world!

If your friend is selling any bits of the old 99's would be interested as I've no idea where to go for things like a "dashboard dimmer switch".

    Cheers,

    Joe

There's a guy I know who specialises in genuine and after market Saab parts, his e-mail address is rsg@eircom.net, he's based in county Cork. He might be able to help you.

    Either is fine
I got a 1990 900 carlsson, unfortunatley head gasket is after going on it, might be a while fixing it:mad:
Irish owners club would be good though
Rang a load of garages, mechanics etc when head gasket went only to be asked to bring it down and they would have a look!

    Hi

New to the forum, but a member of the UK SOC. There are a few folk in the Meath area with an interest in the marque, of which I am one! I have plans to restore a 1979 99turbo that is laid up in my dads yard since 2002.
There is a mechanic in Newcastle Co Dublin that was still repairs them, I believe.

An Irish owners club could be very useful.

Hi there. If you could get the interested people to post here, or PM me and I'll send you my email address. I'm sure there are enough people to make a club worthwhile, its a case of making contact with them.

b.c. - is your Carlsson a mettalic green one that used to be around the Sandymount area?

Yes, that guy in Newcastle is an "old car guy" I think his name is Noel Broderick. I'm sure he has a few Volvos and saabs around his yard. I'll check it out.

I'm based in Kildare and I have 1989 900 Turbo Convertible I'd like to sell. It's full of extras such as heated seats - ahead of its time! I bought it in 2005 with it needing a bit of work on it. I've since fitted a new roof (expensive!) and other bits and pieces. It runs well and it needs a wee bit more of a tidy up here and there, but it is a genuine car and a rare enough motor in Ireland. I've only used it a few times since I got it so I'm looking to sell. It needs a few (minor) bits more done to it but that's reflected in the asking price of €5500.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,567 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Eh, good luck at that price!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 103 ✭✭Star Spangler

    Dades wrote: »

I paid €5K for it and spent €2K on the roof alone and that's without counting other work that's been don on it. A '92 version of the same car is in the Car Buyers Guide for €7,500. Bearing in mind that it's a very rare, ground breaking model I think I'm asking a fair price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 103 ✭✭Star Spangler

I reduced the price significantly as I need to shift it and stuck it on adverts.ie http://adverts.ie/48963 . When you compare it to similar cars for sale on carzone it's a bargain price. If you know anyone interested...!

Hi there! Just came across these postings. I'm a SAAB nut. I've owned 3 classic 900 turbo models and currently have a 1993 Black 3-dr 900 S (Modified to produce a bit more than the standard 145bhp). I also like the older 99- super shape. I'd be interested in working to establish a SAAB Owners Club of Ireland with other interested parties. This could work well as there are several ex-SAAB mechanics around the country who cut their teeth on older SAAB models and are generally cheaper and sometimes more knowledgeable than the main dealers.

Excellent! I'd be willing to help out with this. I can think of a few others who'd be interested. Send me a PM when you are getting started with it, as I don't check this forum extremely regularly.

    Either is fine
I had an old 4 door, 2ltr 900, non turbo, 4 speed, I never got it back on th road, then I ran a nice 91 900s for a year, LOVED it, but it went too... i miss my SAAB. I wish I could find a nice 900 3 door turbo, even just an S not necessarily a FPT....but in decent nick they ar hard to find.

If you ever get a club going or a mrque meet I'd love to know.

about 5 years ago there was a 900 16v turbo for sale at one of the citywest shows, it was a rare ruby model with 60K on the clock, the guy was asking 10 grand, I wish I'd had the bottle to go to the bank!!

Plenty of them in the uk - still very cheap. Rust is a problem, but if you are fussy you can get one that has been looked after.

So, its taken a while, but there seems to be enough interest to try and organise a meetup, and who knows, eventually a Saab owners club in Ireland.
So far on this thread we have the following people interested:

    Gerry
    opeldave
    joes
    b.c.
    the valuer + 2 friends
    Bridger12
    jimjims64

I know of another 2 people at least that will be interested. So, I propose a meetup in mid-late September, where we can kick tyres, and talk saabs, somewhere in the dublin area. If this doesn't suit, post up and we'll try to agree on a more central location.

The best place I think to look for older saabs is pistonheads.com. Its a uk site and the prices are not of the scale unlike what some chancers are looking for over here.

    Hey guys!

A meeting would be super! How would Thursday Sept. 25th / Friday Sept. 26th suit? Also, we need a venue that has a decent car park.

I'm a Southsider, but would recommend the Strawberry Hall at the Strawberry beds in Lucan (MX-5 club and other clubs meet there). It's a nice place to tyre kick and have a drink (be it a coffee or a pint!).

Alternatively, we could look at the Spawell in Templeogue?

    What do you think?

    Simon.

Early October would be better for me but I dont really care so long as we can get a big group of us together. What about the Hellfire club car-park up on Mount Venus, Rathfarnham as a place to meet up ( or maybe the carpark about a mile up the road from it over looking Dublin ). We could kick tyres there and then for whoever wanted we could head off across the Sally Gap and on to Glendalough and maybe back via Blessington. Great driving roads and just the stuff for the making of a good day out.

    What do ye think?

Sorry, have been mad busy with work. I think 25th/26th is probably too soon to mobilise the masses, oct 5th sounds better. Strawberry hall is nice ok, but that road is now full of speed ramps. Mount Venus sounds great, is there any issue with using the clubs car-park?
Spawell is good as an alternative. One I'll throw out is the park in carrickmines, theres a decent coffee shop there. Can maybe combine more than one location.

The spawell is probably a good central place for all to get together. Its right beside the M50 , close to all on Dublins southside and handy for thoses coming from west of Dublin ie Naas etc. Can we just get a count somehow on how many are going to turn up and be sure on numbers. Also its probably important to know incase we have to tell the venue owner we are coming. Anyway to help get this show on the road im now going to suggest that the Spawell is the decided upon meeting place and that its now just a case of deciding a date. Is that ok with you Gerry.

In response to opel dave the Alfa is a dark wine / red in colour. He drives it everyday for the last 6 years and it has run like a Swiss watch. Nearly 130k on it now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,512 ✭✭✭Gerry

Sounds good, cheers for keeping things moving along. So the possible dates are 27th or 28th of September, or the next weekend, 4th or 5th of October. Either suits me, I'll try and put up a poll. It won't be possible to suit everyone, but if theres a decent turnout, I'm sure there will be more meetings :)
I've added the poll, restricted to the 2 sundays for now. Unfortunately I can't update the first post with info..
