These type of discussions always go to sh!t in after hours so I thought I'd post here as it is obviously relevant.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7636896.stm

Listen to the audio clip - very Interesting to hear where it lies in the scale of dangerous drugs.

This is another interesting article from a while back...
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/broadband/tx/drugs/

Doubt they will ever follow suit here

how is this relevant to this forum? just because we listen to dance music and dj does not mean we are e heads!!

Don't be ridiculius. People like clubbers & Dj's know more about drug scene than the general population.

There have been plenty of similar discussions here over the years - a lot more sensible than the sh!t that gets spouted in After Hours

What makes no sense is that ecstasy is percieved as a serious drug, while party pills that would wake the dead are sold over the counter.

I think this is more to do with a legal loophole than anything else, but I agree with you!

Don't talk nonsense man dance music and drugs particulary Ecstasy go hand in hand no matter what anyone says, there wouldn't be any scene at all or just a small fragmented scene only for Ecstasy therefore it's very relevant to this forum and should be discussed accordingly.

Personally speaking i believe Ecstasy/MDMA should be legalised completely and controlled cutting out the gangsters, if this drug was legalised and properly controlled, and proper pills were available not only would it generate billions in revenue but it would eradicate the gangsters/drug barons who make millions from this by churning out batches of what only can be described as crap that are supposed to be pills, you'll go a long way to actually find any decent E's thesedays which is why a lot of people have swicthed to MDMA Crystal which is clean and gives you a nice high but it's steep!

Unfortunately in this nanny state i can't ever seen the Government even remotely considering even declassifying Ecstasy never mind legalising it, the same old crap is being churned out over and over again "just say no" when everyone "just says yes"

I agree non clubbers or those who have never taken E have this misconception that "Ecstasy is dangerous and can kill" when in fact no one has ever actually died as a direct result from taking Ecstasy, there has always been other factors involved whether that be dehydration, or in some cases people have drank too much water, etc, etc, generally speaking E is a relitavely safe drug as long as you don't overdo it (like anything really)

To be pedantic, I think there have been one or two deaths from people having an allergic reaction to e. Simon Reynolds book Energy Flash starts off with a great chapter about the relationship between dance and drugs, and the figures behind the headlines on e related deaths.

I still consider it a dangerous drug, but if taken safely and in moderation, I think most people would agree its fun and a great experience. However, they are illegal for a reason. Like most things, there are a minority of people who go out and spoil it for the rest of us. Done in large quantities and often I'm sure it would have a negative effect on your health and your brain. A familiarisation will make it more likely to try others too.

However, this study shows that just because you do a few pills now and again does not mean you're a junkie/druggo and you are going to fcuk up your life. There is so much misconception and naivety about drugs out there, it really p!sses me off. I kinda in a way feel sorry for people who are totally cluless about the whole thing and will never get to experience how special it can be to go out and do extacy with a group of close friends. I've lost count of the amount of people I know who used to be completely anti-drugs of any kind, and eventually gave it a go - and their entire attitude to them (and other things too) totally changed. They don't call them 'Mind Expanding Drugs' for no reason. Personally I would never tell someone to try it or recommend it - I don't think that it fair - but its fun to see how people change if they do decide to give it a try for themselves...

Still there are dangers and people do go over the top. I personally know people who did go too far, and I've heard some shocking stories of others experiences.

As the story says you can get some pretty severe sentences for being caught with a relatively small amount and I think that is just unfair. You can get a perfectly respectable working professional doing his bit for society - so once in a while he likes to go out with some close friends, do a few pills and have a good night - just cause he is caught with a few pills does not mean we should crap up our prisons and seriously affect the rest of his life for this.

Unfortunately there are far too many completely ignorant idiots who think anyone who does any drugs whatsoever should just be locked up to burn in hell.

The worst thing about drugs... are drug dealers.... legalize the lot and deal with the fallout. At least then drug users aren't pushed into subcultures/underclasses and treated like scum etc...

God knows what the mafia/gansters would move onto next? - maybe selling fags to schoolkids outside the playground (or Uzis) - who knows.

Know a fellow who claims he took 4 party pills together. That was a year ago and he's still awake.

dont talk nonsense you!! i would say that XTC and clubbing and partying go hand in hand but for you to suggest there would be no dance music without XTC is just plain stupid.. the early creators of house music and electronic music have stood up many times before to say that they do not condone the use of drugs.. electronic music was around long before the drug XTC was being taken in clubs.. are you seriously saying that dance music was a by product of XTC?? this post does not belong in this forum its people like you who lump drugs and music together who have given the "dance music" scene a bad name.. just because i like a 4/4 beat dont mean im taking XTC.. i understand that alot of people who go to clubs are doing XTC but not us all.. if that was the case id be buzzin of my head 24/7 cuz i listen/produce and write about dance music 24/7..

ha ha that's nothing mate... I know people who have done 20-25 pills in one night - double and tripple dropping each time, and one had that did exactly 36 in 36 hours in Ibiza.

    Stupid imo

In fairness, I think they do go hand in hand. I can see what your saying, that you dont have to be on pills to enjoy dance music, but it does help!! I would like a lot of different types of music and to me Dance was always a scene I never really got. Until I tried Ecstacy. After that I started to understand it a bit more and now Its the only type of music I listen to. I would still take a pill if the occasion required it, but would in no way be a pill head who's always out of his nut. My point is that while there could still be dance music without ecstacy, it just wouldn't be as fun!!!

Personally if I want to have a really good night of music, the more sober I am the better I enjoy it.

Each to their own I suppose. My point was that it was Ecstacy that opened my mind and turned me on to the dance scene, and to me it will always be associated with it.
I go to dance gigs myself and just have a few drinks now and enjoy the night, but if I never took a pill it is not a scene I would ever have got into. This is just my opinion.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,616 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

That is definitely the case for a huge amount of people. Loads of people only develop a love for dance music after trying pills - which is why drugs and clubbers often go hand in hand.

I was very passionate about the music well before I ever did pills.

the first real danceable electronic music came out late 70's early 80's,("shari vari" by a number of names,"the chase" by giorgio moroder, to name a few, and danceable as in it could be played in dj sets and still sound good today) yet dance music and the whole counterculture scene didnt EXPLODE until the late 80's hand in hand with the introduction of mdma and then acid to the dancefloor.this is not a coincidence.

not saying that you have to be off yer face to enjoy or get into it, but i guarantee the majority of people who are really into underground electronic music would not have opened their minds to it ( me included, i used to be a mettler!) unless the pills helped them along.

there would be dance music without xtc, but it wouldnt be right, that intense feeling wouldnt be there.life is real **** sometimes, and a dancefloor with a great dj is a savage release once in a while....

just like woodstock and the 60's counterculture was provoked by lsd and marijuana + the bands that created amazing music due to their mind bending experiences.. ever hear bill hicks take on musicians who dont take drugs?(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J10w3FuCwfQ) its so true! david bowie, the doors, the beatles a few obvious examples, to me the link between music and drugs is clear

dont get me wrong, music can be created and enjoyed on many levels, sober or not, its just ****ty that the law thinks otherwise.and the general public suffer because of this.bad drugs= overdoses, profits for gangs, not to mention people being unesessarily introduced to other drugs because gangs sell anything that turns a profit, where as, legalized the drugs would be cleaner and regulated. i suppose i have a strong view on it, I am up in court for mdma possession in November. Shiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeet.

Brilliant, I've always wondered about that, cause it is an accapella in a tune I have - can't remember which one but its on one of my mixes, i'll try to dig it out

Thanks be to Jaysus. The idea of MDMA being in the same category as crack and heroin is ridiculous.

Let's have a little realism, and a bit less indignation, please. I'd wager that 9 out of every 10 of the visitors to this forum have taken ecstasy at least once.

Edit: In fact, let's find out!

I never said there would be no dance music if there was no E i said it would no doubt be a small fragmented scene it would've never in a million years have gotten as massive as it is today that is the absolute facts, Ecstasy changed the lives of millons of people myself included dramitically, before i took an E i had an interest in the music but in 1990 when i done my first E it had a profound effect on me, i can nearly say i never felt as good in my entire life it was that amazing and probably never will, and after that my obsession with the Rave scene began and is still there 18 years later, if id have never taken an E chances are id probably just be an Indie or rock head and not massively into the Rave scene, i can guarantee you mate the vast majority of people who are into dance music will attribute it to Ecstasy.:)
