Unlike its predecessor the PS3 is currently pretty bereft of decent (or really any) rpg's. At the moment you have:

Eternal Sonata - I havent played it (bit too "cutsey") but its got generally positive reveiws (8.5 average on Gamestats).

Enchanted Arms - A fairly by the numbers jrpg. Not bad, but unfortunately one of the most appealing aspects - the ability to fight against other players golems was mysteriously removed from the PS3 version.

Elder Scrolls IV - Its won numerous awards and has generally reviewed extremely well. Personally I found it boring after a while and there are certain issues with the levelling mechanics that strain suspension of disbelief. That aside, if you havent played it it may be worth a look and will be cheap to pickup.

Disgaea 3 - A strategy rpg, but its an excellent game and a great introduction to the Disgaea series if you arent already familiar with it. Like its pre-decessors it contains (literally) over a hundred of hours of gameplay.

Valkyria Chronicles - Not an rpg per se, more of a strategy rpg hybrid. But its an excellent game, easily the best of the ones Ive mentioned and I'd certainly recommend picking it up.

On the horizon you have stuff like White Knight Chronicles and FF XIII, so hopefully the PS3 will become as good a platform for rpg's as the PS2 is.

Just on elder scrolls oblivion, if your picking it up make sure to grab the game of the year edition so you get all the extra's :D

I have to admit it looks gorgous on the ps3.

It won't get much support since nobody has bought it but really get yourself Valkyria Chronicles. It's far and away the best thing on the PS3.

Well I picked up Valkyria Chronicles on your recommendation and I must say it seems pretty smart the little of it I've had time to play.

What's the combat system like in that? Is it the kind of JRPG style that games like Final Fantasy where you disappear into a mini-game, or is it more of a RTS type or affair. This is the only thing holding me back from getting the game.

Gameplay in Valkyria Chronicles starts out in Command Mode, so you have a map with badges on it representing your units. It looks like a simplified RTS map basically. If you select a unit you zoom down into a third person view and you can move them wherever you want.

Every unit has a certain amount of movement points represented by a bar, which decreases as you move. Scouts have a larger bar and can move more, Snipers have a shorter bar and thus can move less. Selecting a unit and moving them around uses up command points, of which you get a certain amount every turn. To move a unit costs 1 command point and to move a tank costs 2 command points. Every time you spend command points, you are able to move the unit and perform an action i.e. use weapon or heal.

So basically Valkyria Chronicles is an SRPG, except that you aren't limited to a chessboard like style of play but can move your units wherever you want limited by movement points. You have to spend command points every turn, which get replenished the next time your turn comes around.

What makes the system very cool for me is that you can spend command points on the same unit in one turn, so if you get your unit into a really sweet position you can use them again without waiting, which can give you an advantage. Their movement bar decreases with each subsequent turn though if you use them more than once per round.

I think what is most different about the game is the use of the third or first person viewpoint when you're using your troops. You actually get to aim the weapon instead of the unit doing everything, so you can get a headshot meaning a one-hit kill or take out the threads of a tank.

Gothpunk explained it quite well. TBH it's not really a JRPG, it just kind of has the same feeling and style. There's no overworld the only gameplay is basically the combat. It has more in common with Advance Wars than anything but instead of the a checkerboard when you move units it goes into a third person mode where you can freely move your unit around and avoid crossfire before taking aim in first person mode and firing. It's not an RTS since it's still turn based but there are real time elements. Levelling up is also very streamlined. You just go to the training field and level up the specific class you want with your exp points. All units of that class are then levelled up.

I suggest you get this game if you like strategy games like advance wars or fire emblem. It's really the next evolution for that type of game, a massive step forward. Even with the sometimes erratic and strange AI behaviour doesn't stop this game being anything less than great fun. Couple that with gorgeous visuals, stunning soundtrack, nice storyline and surprisingly great voice acting.

DLC is coming soon as well, one of which lets you control the bad guys for a mission or two.

BTW there's a demo on PSN. Check it out. It has a tutorial and skirmish mode. It will give you a feel for the gameplay but the full game has much better missions.
