Multiple PC problems/Phantom problems

    Hi All

A couple of weeks ago my DVD drive on my PC stopped working. Press the open button and the light flashes but nothing happens, the drawer doesn't open and it doesn't make any noise.

I wasn't to rushed to sort it as I have a DVD burner attched also so used that instead.

Decided to investigate the other day and went to run an old version of Sandra on it. Accidently clicked on the option to run on the entire PC and was interested in the results it threw up.

According to Sandra my Athalon 3000+ was running at 1ghz and this was probably due to a fan being broken as the Temperature it was reading was massive.

Got a bit worried about this so took the cover off the PC and as far as I can make out all fans are running. Maybe they aren't running fast enough but I couldn't tell.

Now I doubt the problem with the DVD drive and the temp problem are connected, I just uncovered one with the other.

Also I am now getting a screen on boot up with the option to flash the Bios, this wasn't there before and not sure if it has any relevance.

Nothing has changed with the PC except that I now have a ZYXEL router from BT connected to it with an ethernet cable. Again I doubt this is the cause of anything.

Any ideas as to what I can do?

Not sure what the temps were reading, seemed quite high but I think they might have been dodgy readings. Will run it again when i get home this evening.

I think this was caused when my girlfriend started up the PC with a floppy in the drive, that is when the start up screens changed and I got a couple of uninstalled harware errors when the PC started up.

Do I need to flash the BIOS to restore the settings. Not got much experience with mother board settings/Bios

Safe to assume that the DVD drive is borked though as this was acting up before the temp problems

The PC has been running for about 15 minutes and the diagnostic is reporting a motherboard temp of 255.9C/492.7F

Will run it again in half an hour or so and see what it says

Those readings can't be right. What is the CPU temperature
Did u change the Bios settings to what they should be on.

I reckon the readings are duff alright

Don't know how to check the CPU temp and haven't gone near the Bios as have never needed to before and am wary of touching it

That is why I figured flashing it would be easier than messing with the settings

Will have a look into this tomorrow evening

My only free one of the week and I have to spend it messing with my computers innards

Thanks for the advice, will post up how I get on or if I get stuck

This appears to be a non issue thankfully

The Bios is reporting MB temps of 26C/78F and CPU temps of 31C/87/F

Don't think these temps are too high and certainly not as high as Sandra was reporting

DVD drive is still buggered but that is a whole seperate issue

It's a quite high temperature. Motherboards usually come with a shutdown temperature...
