i am really conscious of not breaking any etiquette here...this is not a promo piece. I have lurked on this site for a while now and i find the knowledge and experience of the regular posters here both motivational and informative (and often amusing) - all helpful in terms of my preparation for my first marathon in march. So i'd be loath to pi55 anyone off.

A new public sports and leisure facility opened in kilkenny this week - In addition to the existing athletics track (which is still there). it has a 25m pool and two other kids pools, a massive sports hall with stadium seating (enough for 3 full basketball courts), a gym, rooms for classes, and four astro-turf pitches. I have to say it is pretty epic. www.thewatershed.ie.

The reason i'm posting this here is firstly that we did the branding for it - of which i'm very proud :-). But the team behind the project are dedicated to the idea that making sport and fitness a part of peoples everyday life is a a cause worth fighting for.

And that in a time of brutally unhealthy, consumer-driven lifestyles, poor diet and obesity there are very few people or organisations giving out a positive message about sports and activity for the general population - and with our health system in the sh!ts, effort should be put into promoting this type of activity - not on rearranging hospital beds and consultant fee management.

I'm sure i'm not the only one who enjoys more than just physical benefits from running - but benefits that improve nearly every aspect of my life - and this is what the centre wants to promote for everyone - and just like this forum - irrespective of ability. And that the facility should be a turning point in people's lives.

    thanks.

Nice post and nice website - well done. Pity the track couldn't have been converted to an indoor one while you were at it :pac:

You won't find many contradictory opinions here on the benefits of an active lifestyle. Vouchers for fitness centres should be handed out as an alternative to doctors' prescriptions perhaps.

The ideals of you and your colleagues are to be applauded and I hope the centre thrives.

Looks great. I have been waiting for this for a while after I heard it mooted a while back. Loughboy was a great place to train with great staff.

Do you know much about the gym and what kind of equipment and space the place has?

tingle, i'm not really a gym person - so this could all be totally standard stuff! Basically, the gym is 3,200 sq ft, and a studio that is half that size for classes. When you go in there is like an ATM machine were you punch in yr number, and then all the machines (treadmills, rowers, resistance type ones) know what kind of personalised programme you are on. They all have screens and are ipod friendly..because they have their own screens i don't think there are the big plasma's on the wall. The Gym is on the first floor looking out over the running track and grass football pitch. As i said, not my field of expertise - but it looked pretty impressive to me.

The thing that appeals most to me is the multi-disciplinary thing you can go and swim and run on the track or the road, or swim and gym or whatever combo suit - rather than everything been separated out.

thanks for the reply RoyMcc, i hope it gets a really good community feel to it - if that happens it will gather momentum.

BTW, i think there is a specific core strengthening programme starting in january for marathon runners.

Is there anything like this in Dublin, Is irishtown open to the public or just members.
If a club wanted to get a spot for a night on a track are the charges high, I remember training out in ALSA years ago but come may i'd like to get onto a track again.

Irishtown is a public facility Shels. You can 'pay as you go' or take out a membership (prices reduced for 2009 I notice). Of course you could join Crusaders AC for €85pa and get unlimited use of track, gym etc :) Crusaders have exclusive use Tues/Thurs 6.30-7.30 and Sat 10-11 but otherwise groups can book. Some chancers called DSD or something have been spotted occasionally :pac:
