    Hi all.
My young lad will be ten in a few weeks and wants a bike for his birthday. He absolutely loves cycling and Mountain biking in particular. I've had him off track in the phoenix park for the last 2 years and brought him up the mountains a few times. I don't like spoiling him but I want to get a decentish light mtb. I have a budget of €350 or maybe slightly more if needs be. Obviously at his age we wont be doing anything too severe, Mainly just cycling along the fire tracks in Wicklow forests. Could anybody point me in the right direction. It's far and above what we ever spend on the kids (xmas included) but I really want to encourage him into a healthy lifestyle. I was looking at these...........

Islabikes are a bit more reasonable with recent €/£ rates.

    This looks like good value

To buy new in 2007 they were £450 so with the 30% discount from wiggle and the euro they way it is this looks like a great deal. Kona bikes are excellent also. I'm not sure how light it is though.

Yeah, if he's interested then its money well spent, better than getting him an ipod or xbox :)

The bikes you have mentioned don't have disc brakes. If he likes mountain biking that much he'd probably love the Kona as it would be a big deal for him to have the disc brakes. I remember when I was 10 I wanted to have the best of everything (actually this hasn't changed)

I second this - two of my nephews, aged 10 and 12 respectively, were recently bought Islabikes and while they never showed much enthusiasm for cycling before those bikes, they love it now. Sterling euro rate means great value at the moment too.

This Kona looks pretty good. Looks the biz to me.
