Generally a graphic designer could do this sort of work for you.

    Not everyone has photoshop though!

Can anyone confirm that Paint.NET can do this?

if it can then the OP can easily post again asking for a short tutorial on it. There should be loads online.

I used to do it for decorating the house. Take a pic then change colours and wall papers :D

You can use Gimp for Windows, it is not that complicated, is powerful and it is free.

The trick is to select just the body work and use the colour tone tools, not actually "paint" the colour with a brush tool.

Howdy all. First things first, i am using Adobe Photoshop Pro 7.0 do do all this.

    Handy Short cuts:
    ctrl-alt-z = Undo
    ctrl-shift-z = redo all undo's
    ctrl-shift-u = desaturate
    ctrl-+ = zoom in (minus =zoom out)

Right so, starting off. Get a picture of a car. Make sure it's a fair big size (anything over 1024*800 should be enough. This is so that when you zoom in, it won't distort the picture.) I've chosen a 5 series, in grey.

    Firstly click the pen tool.
    Pic1.jpg

Then, start off on a point on the car. (Generally one of the wheel arches is a handy place to start). Now start clicking. You want to select the outline of the car, keep as close to the lines as possible. Don't select anything you don't want to colour. Just select the outline of the car, we will worry about cutting out bits later, windows etc.)
    Pic2.jpg

I've highligthed the bit i'm selecting in orange. If possible (to make life easier for yourself later), where you can, don't select bits. For example, on the front light, i am clicking in around the back of it.
    Pic3.jpg

    LIkewise for the back window.
    Pic4.jpg

Once you have selected the outline of the car, right click on the image, and go to make selection.

Im sure he means illegally and you cant call him "ignorant" because other people are lacking knowledge, ironically they would be the definition of ignorant.

Thanks - I'll wreak havoc on Carzone :D

Post a before and after of the pic of my C5 from Sunday..........

Once selected, the car should look something like this.
    Pic6.jpg

This is where it gets somewhat tricky. You now need to deselect the parts of the car you don't want coloured, ie. the windows, lights etc. etc. For this, you are going to need the polygon lasoo.
    Pic7.jpg

While holding ALT, (you should now see a minus sign beside the lasoo icon), click at a point where you want to start cutting out. I have started just underneath the mirror and i am working my way across, and up around the window.

WARNING: Don't forget to hold alt. Also be very very careful, if you make a mistake with the lasoo tool, you can't go back(unlike the pencil tool), and will have to start the process again. Just be careful with it.
Here is an example of cutting out the window
    Pic8.jpg

This is what it should look like when you complete the window.
    Pic10.jpg

You now need to do this for all the other bits you don't want selected. When you are finished selecting, you should be left with something like this,
    Pic11.jpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

Now, once you are finished selecting, hold ctrl+C (to copy), and then ctrl+V (to paste) what you have just done. Don't worry that all your selection has just disappeared, it's normal. Now, with the Move Tool, click and drag the part of the car you have selected like so
    Pic12.jpg

This is just to check you have selected the bits you want. Pressing ctrl+alt+z (undo) will bring the car back. down to it's origional position. If you have missing any bits, undo again until your selection comes back up.

Now, to desaturate. (This basically takes out most of the colour, although it's not very obvious on grey). ctrl+shift+U desaturates the car like so:
    Untitled-13copy.jpg

Now, go Image - Adjustments -Variations
    Untitled-13copy.jpg

This is where the fun begins. Choose your colour by adding more blue, red etc. etc. and darken it and lighten it on the left hand side.
    Untitled-15copy.jpg

Press ok and your done. (If you are not happy with the colour, undo, and then go to Variations again and play away with the colours)
    Untitled-16copy.jpg

    Happy days.

If you used a crap quaility pic from the start, it might come out bad in the end. Black is also a hard colour to change, and to colour something black is ahrd.

LOl, i'm passing my evening, so might night will start quicker. It's only starting now:D

Once you get good at it, you can learn how to lower, add wheels, get rid of door handles etc. Wheels can often be hard to do. Like the back wheel in this pic, looks a bit off. Only a quick one:P
