Sad news but I don't think you can blame the sport of running. I wonder how many unhealthy lifestyles have been majorly altered thanks to this sport. Also we don't know enough about this poor chap. All my best to his family and friends.

True, it would be great to see a lot more people doing a bit of running but lets be under no illusions. Running 26 miles is a very, very unhealthy thing to attempt.

    In what way?

RIP to the young man who died today.
Won't comment on anything else but I wasn´t aware during or after the run until a friend text me to let me know, very sad.

maybe start a separate thread to discuss this ?

You may be a climate expert but you are certainly no medical expert. People have died from cardiac problems while playing golf, soccer and gaa. Should football be now cut to 25 minutes each way instead of 45? Should a round of golf be now cut to 8 holes instead of 18?
May Colin rest in peace and condolences to his family and friends and his gaa clubmates.

Yes, I agree, if you wish to start a debate on this Climate Expert, maybe start another thread.

RIP to the young man and always sad when someone passes away playing sport.

R.I.P very sad to see a young man cut down in his prime. Deepest sympathy to family and friends.

Great pity, 27 is too young. I can only imagine how this will impact on people that know him. It can happen in any sport, nobody knows their time. Does anyone know if the poor guy was Ireland based?

Utmost sympathy to all his family and friends at what must be an awful time for them. 27 is indeed too young.

That is terrible news. It's strange to see the person being named so quickly as well. I hope that his family aren't learning about it through the media ...

There's a news item here that gives a lot of his background, makes the whole episode all the more sad.

...went to college and played hurling with this guy in Maynooth for 3 years...gutted...the article really sums Colin up. He was an all round good guy, gave 100% to everything, a great laugh, a decent skin, may he rest in peace.

R.I.P. Its so sad, my heart goes out to his family.

I will run an extra 5 miles this evening with no watch or reason other than to honour the 5 he didn't get a chance to do. I will not be posting them on the 1000 thread.

I'll do 5 tomorrow despite the weather forecast but will add them on :

"Tomorrow will be wet and windy, with heavy rain spreading eastwards across the country. It will also be significantly colder than recent days, with top temperatures of just 5 to 9 degrees"

Great idea MCOS. Had no intention of running today, but put on the runners straight away after seeing your suggestion.

It's a wonder how/if no problems showed up in his training?
Takes guts and dedication to stand at the start line of any marathon.
Total hero..God bless him and his family.

Possibly he wasn't a marathon runner per se as he was doing it for charity? I only wondered this as he was playing hurling and football to a relatively high level, and combining long-distance running with the sprint & turn nature of hurling would be tough on the body / knees if you are running high mileage.. Or maybe the weather was hotter than usual?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,145 ✭✭✭Bambaata

weather was fine. perfect in fact. the sun stayed away and it was nice and mild with a bit of drizzle near the start. will any more details come out about it? Its a terrible tragedy when you look at him recently getting engaged, doing it for charity and his mother/gf travelling over as a surprise visit!

Very sad news alright. We were out having a few pints that evening when we heard about what happened, sad to think he should have been out enjoying himself too with medal in the back pocket!

I'd have to agree with Bambaata though - It wasn't the weather that caused it. The day was perfect for running.

Sudden death among adults in sporting events has become very noticable. Forty professional footballers have died on the pitch or in training in Europe in the past five years. The FAI test every player in the League of Ireland and were successful last year in discovering one player with the potential for this condition. This footballer, Sean Prunty, had to give up the game. I know his father well as he was an excellent athlete in his day. One of the most famous cases in Ireland recently was Cormac MacAnallen from Tyrone.
These cases had little to do with fitness or lack of. In a study done regarding the professional footballers, one common denominator among those who died was the use of analgaesics during recent injury.
If you are worried, or if there is a history of heart disease in your family, go for a regular check up.

Hey hard worker, is there specific screening for this heart risk?
Before I ran my first marathon I just had a routine checkup at the end of my training and the doctor said I was good to go.

There is specific testing for this and I'm not sure if it would be covered in your routine check up.
Out of curiosity, which Rovers do you follow? I ask this because it was Dr Alan Byrne who introduced the testing for the FAI and he will be at the first game in Tallaght Stadium. I can ask him then.
Seperately, my son is doing a paper on this subject at the moment and I'll check with him tonight when I Skype him.
