VRT on extras

    Hi
I imported a Ford Smax yesterday from UK through a dealer in Derry.
Went to the VRT office today to pay the VRT which we had calculated at just shy of 7k using the online calculator.

The delightful lady in the VRT office conducted a thorough inspection of the car, inside and out - even under the bonnet.
She dutifully recorded all the extras on the car and said she would have to contact head office to see which, if any of the extras are standard with the particular model of car.

So, my question is how do they calculate the VRT on these?
Is it 24% of the cost price?
    Thanks

AFAIK it's done at the same VRT rate as the car. Even if something was standard in the UK, they will still see it as an extra if it wasn't standard on the equivalent Irish model.

I think thats correct. I also saw it mentioned here that the extras get discounted. e.g. E1000 worth of extras, 1 year old so discounted to E800. Pay VRT at 24% on E800. Something like that anyway...

I think this is crazy. Surley the Open Market Value of the car includes the extras. When you buy a second hand car you pay for what ever is in or on it.

VRT is paid on a car. How can they ask you to pay it on a sun-roof, radio, sat-nav etc?

    Money racket........

?? The quoted OMSP is for a standard car, the OMSP of a car with extras is of course higher.

    Strong coincidence here...:D

I put a deposit on an smax in UK yesterday and are picking up next week. What did you go for?

The VRT site specifically lists the 3 different specs - LX, Zetec and Titanium - and the difference on my mileage and date etc was €800 between LX and Titanium. So fact that they list the spec's should mean that accounts for extras, couple this with the fact that the spec's within each of above is pretty much similar between Ireland and UK.

My concern is that I got the Titanium X Pack too - this includes leather trim, 18", panoramic roof and Xenon's.... the leather will be dead giveaway if they inspect but most other stuff is what's on the Titanium in Ireland.

PM me if you want as interested to see how you get on. Did they give you the number plate in meantime?

they are not asking for it like that,
the VRt is based on the OMSP of the car, the OMSP of a car on the VRT website is just the trim level, so if a car has anything more added than that they have to take it into account...
it is like a dealer having two Ford focus's say both 07 reg, both lx spec, same mileage, but one has had alloys fitted, sun roof, bluetooth radio, extra body kit, which car will cost you more to buy????? therefore the price of VRT has to change from the website standard price

I understand but the difference between selling price of a standard spec car and one with extras such a leather and bigger alloys is in reality very very small if any. All the extras do in the second hand market is make the car easier to sell.

That is sometimes but not always true, it very much depends on the type and age of the car. The revenue do depreciate extras, and don't charge at all if the car is more than four years old.

VRT your car on a day when it's pissing down - They are not keen on going outside to view anything then.:D

work out the cost of the extras on your car, depreciate them by 25% per year and then
take the vrt rate of what you get.

eg 1000 of extras on an 07 car, 2 years depreciation, 500 off.

vrt rate of 24% of 500 = 120 on top of base vrt bill.

I was thinking of pushing both kids in the pram - with big sh1ts in their nappy's and then pinch them just as we get to the counter. The bad smell coupled with the screaming may just want them rid of me ASAP! :D

So of extras depreciate 25% each year - what about me bringing in a May 08? - can I expect extra depreciation?

I don't think they go out to check the car, they get information from the car makers. A lot of people won't bring the car with them when VRT'ing it if it's in ROI over 24 hours.

That depends on the type of car. I know they can check VW, Audi etc. for their extra's just by the chassis number cos each car is on a central database. (maybe Audichris can confirm this)
Other cars then need to be checked manually.

Vrt is also paid on any options you get on a new car too, from metallic paint to leather.

VRO office rule no 1 always arrive at the counter as close to closing time as possible.

VRO office rule no 2 When they mention inspecting your car feign surprise and say "god the traffic was so mental i had to park at the other end of town in the multistorey,i didnt realise you needed to inspect it,shall i come back tomorrow?"

    :D

I recently purchased a Ford Focus Zetec and according to the Ford.ie site, alloys, leather steering wheel, sport seats etc are all standard. The only extra is metallic paint.

Do revenue go by this or charge for all of the above anyway?

It is a 2008 focus. Do they go by the current spec list or a list at the time it was first reg'd in the UK?

We got the VRT price back from the VRT office last friday.
They calculated it as 3150 of extras, so 24% of this is 756 which brought the total to 7693.

There was no depreciation on the extras, its an April 2008.

Skyuser, the staff absolutely carried out a full inspection of the car, one processed my paperwork while another viewed the car.

She told me they were exceptionally busy since january and expected it to get busier as the sterling exchange rate had improved again.

I would imagine that perhaps VRT offices in Kerry or Cork would not be as busy as offices along the border regions. I attended the Sligo office, where there was a queue on the day! Also had a very cranky toddler with me which made no difference.
I imagine the staff have been instructed to crack down on any extras slipping through the net with the current economic crisis.
Wonder whats in store for imports in the budget.

    Kopkillers,
VRT worked out at just under 7700 euro.
All in cost us 26,000 euro to get the car.
Great bargain. Lovely car with loads of extras.
    Very pleased.

if its over 4 years old they dont check them in my experience. although they didnt check a 2005 Avensis on my early last year.

Can anyone confirm that the VRO guys will not bother with extras once the car is over 4 years old?

I'm planning to bring in an '05 that will turn 4 years in few weeks' time. It used to be an ex demo and had loads of extras. When new it bumped the price up by an extra £6000 !!!

Is the 4 year rule definite? Just don't want to be paying any more on top of the VRT, hopefully

I paid 16000 sterling for an S-Max 1.8 TDI titanium version. You'll pay a fortune for this version here..leather steering wheel, full electrics, parking sensors and so on..Its a year old. Picking it up next week but I need to put 850 miles on it since the mileage is low and I don't want to pay the VAT as well as the VRT. Buying it in London and plan to drive to Scotland, stay over night the drive back to put the mieage up...has to be done!!
Still reckon I'll save lots so it should be worth it in the end...:)

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,716 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

not encouraging that, but if the mileage is close to the VAT cut-off they'll probably ask to look at the invoice to check what mileage was on it when bought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭manta356

Buying privately,no invoice. They dont know what you paid for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 179 ✭✭newwifey

    Kopkillers,
    Are you buying privately?
The garage we bought from definately filled in the milage on the paperwork so not sure if you will get around that. Its part of the warranty documentation also.
VRT guys also looked for it on paper - not by checking the clock.
Also am I right in saying its 6ooo km not miles as the cut off for vat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭bromley52

    yes it is 6000KM. (3750miles)

Also the age needs to be > 6months. Even a day inside the 6 months you will be charged VAT so be careful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 Kopkillers

I'm buying from a dealer and they say it's not their policy to put the mileage on the docs when they sell a car.
I'm expecting the VRO guys to check the mileage physically as part of their inspection and if needed I can fill in the mieage myself on the transfer of ownership docs...
If I'm wasting my time here and will have to pay the VAT i'll pull out of the deal...fliht/ferry now booked but I'd gladly right these expenses off...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 Kopkillers

I presume I can just tell them I bought it privately and that way there would be no invoice and hence no record of mileage correct??

Went to VRO today to register my BMW. Was told it needs to be sent away to check for extras even though it's 4 years old. He said they send BMW Audi Mercerdes and Land Rover.

€11 :D. I'm pretty sure there is about €1000 worth of extra on it.

Did they give you a breakdown of extras and how they're charged?

Would you mind telling us the model of your car and the options that are on it.

    Cheers

I brought in an 08 S-Max in March and I got caught for extra €500 in VRT. I had budgetted for €800 as it was full loaded but he never got most of them and if he had I was looking at a lot more cause he told me bulk of extra was from "Panoramic Sunroof" - he never twigged leather, Xenons, 18" upgrade, privacy glass etc.

He told me all cars have to be inspected and he had a basic photo copy checklist that he went through - it had things like Metallic Paint, Air Con, Electric Windows, Leather Seats, Parking Sensors, Phone Kit, Alloys, Sunroof -he saw the phone buttons on my radio and put it down; I do not think I got caught for it as they took into account that many of the items above were part of the Titanium spec.

The spec I got would have been over €52k new; am sure I would have got a sizeable cash discount for buying new but for May 08 with 11k miles I had this on the road for approx €26.5k and have more warranty than buying new today - have not taxed it yet but paid my cheque on 1st April so getting my full months road tax;)
