Seems Apple are secretly telling Their retailers to send the older Plastic Macbooks in for repair if they have cracks on the bottom enclosure. regardless of warranty.

I have a crack on mine at the edge of the right palm rest. If this turns out to be the case, where in Ireland, if anywhere would you go to get this looked at?

Give them a ring, they'll send UPS out to pick it up if it needs to be repaired.

Exact same here, started out as a crack then eventually a two inch long sliver of plastic (only about 2mm wide) broke off so that there is now a gap between
the palm rest & outer casing. My mac is a couple of years old though so dunno if its still under warranty for repair.

I too have a crack to the right of the trackpad but it isn't on the bottom casing as such, the crack is on the matte inside casing. Maybe I am reading the article wrong but I'm not sure they will fix this part of the Mc. Has anyone rang Apple yet whose Mac is out of warrenty?

apple store in belfast will replace the casing free of charge if you can show that it is caused by normal wear and tear. If its smashed to bits they wont touch it. Just arrange a time, call in with your macbook and they should have it ready in a day or two. Alternatively, call apple suport and they may sent someone from ups to collect it.

I've had the hairline crack on the palmrest fixed once already - at the time i think it was mactivate who fixed it - someone came out, picked it up and had it back to me within a week.. tho it came back with a dodgy battery..

It's happened again in the exact same place - must get it done shortly as warranty is up in july

    I have the same problem.

It's being held on with tape at the moment.

Is there anywhere in Dublin that can handle this? I don't think I trust UPS to come and take mine away. It's really not a huge deal, but if it can be fixed then I won't complain.

When I rang Apple about mine they said that laptops/computers will not be picked up by them- you need to bring them to a repair centre.

    http://www.apple.com/ie/support/

If you use their Online Service assistant it'll tell you what repair centres you can go to in your county.

Would it matter that I bought my Mac in Canada? I assume all can be traced from serial no.s and that I don't need the receipt?

Nope, they don't care where you buy it.

No retailers near me whatsoever though!

That's exactly where the crack on mine is Basquille although it's not as bad as yours.

Yep, those photos are about a year old.. the shot from the first photo is now on both sides of the track-pad.

It's where the hard plastic hinge at the top meets the base... it was a daft decision by Apple anyways. Let's put a soft plastic on the base in which a hard plastic hinge can "rest"

Have you rang Apple and tried to get it fixed? I wonder if Apple has improve the quality of the casing since. They are a lovely Laptop but hard to maintain.

    Don't get me started..!

Rang them as I wrote a nice 3 page document with pictures that I wanted to send to them.. asked for an e-mail address to send it to from the guy on support.

He said to use the webform that you couldn't attach files to. Anyways, long story short, I sent it to CS Manager in Apple and almost 2 years later, have heard absolutely nothing back.

Absolutely atrocious attitude to be honest!

Well if your still interested in trying to get it fixed, you could try this email address: sjobs@apple.com

Apparetnly it's Steve Jobs Email address or office Email address. Anyway, I emailed Apple using this address and I got a quick and helpfull response.

DecTek or Mactivate both have a courier collection service (20euro out of warranty) or you can drop it off. There's also The Mac Shop in Merrion square.

even if in warranty, dectek do free pick up but charge for return - 20 euro. absurd! plus, they don't mention this until they have your macbook and you've been kept waiting a week! you've been warned now!
