    Hi all,
I know this question has probably been asked a million times but after thrawling through the search engine ive had no luck.

Im on my first time provsional licsence and 17 years old and in looking to get insured so i can actually get driving. Id be driving a 1l 96 suzuki alto. Id be looking to get insured as a named driver with my parents.
I was thinking of getting my mother as the main driver and my father and myself as the named drivers. however id really be the main driver but i cant afford 4 or 5000 quid for insurance. Im only thinking of putting both parents down as drivers as a friend of mine got dirt cheap (around the 1k mark) by doing this and hes the same age but a bigger car.

So if i was to do this and had an accidents would it just be my mothers no claim bonus that would be effected or would my dads be to because the both have big ncbs and wouldnt want to ruin that because of my stupidity.

so whats peoples oppinions on this or any other advice to get a cheap quote because i really cant afford much

    Thanks in advance
    Paddy

ps sorry if this is in the wrong place feel free to move it

    Get your full license first?

Ya get your licence and if you are going to be sharing the driving with both parents, it should be ok to just be a named driver.
You really shouldnt be a named driver if you are the main user.

    Well ...here's a bit of a connundrum, folks;

Assuming paddypender is a good little citizen and only ever drives on his leraners permit when accompanied ...IS he (CAN he even) be the main driver?

Is it two main drivers in this case?

    No main driver at all?

I'd advise getting lessons from a qualified instructor, your parents have likely picked up lots of bad habits and your better learning from someone teaching newbies day in day out.

For the car whoever puts their name down on the car as the policyholder will lose their no claims bonus if you crash it.

Peasant as you put it I would be a good little citizen and be accompanied all the time for two reason 1) parents have a way of getting you to do what they want 2) i wouldnt trust myself yet to be driving on my own theres alot that i can go wrong.
my thoughts exactly can i be a full holder because i dont think i could be considering they'd hardly insure me (or pay out) if they knew i was evidently going to breaking the law. Im new to this so i dont really know.

Tipsy thanks for that 1 of my problems sorted anyway.

thanks for the replies much appreciated

Just get your mam to get Bonus Protection on the policy just in case.

When I was with FBD it was an extra hundred quid but it could save you more than that if you do have an accident.

Best of luck with the new car too

theres a lot of companies on the internet to compare insurance quotes but most of these have certain criteria and they may not give you a quote based on your age unless you actually ring them,eg 123.ie make an assumption you are at least 19 when getting an online quote,

for me quinn insurance was nearly €500 cheaper than anyone else,
