The Viper as Debt Collecter

Here is another link for the Viper after being hired by businesses in Carlow to recover monies owed - seemingly it worked fairly well :rolleyes:

    http://archives.tcm.ie/carlownationalist/2009/01/21/story35440.asp
‘The Viper’ hired by Carlow firms to collect debts

NOTORIOUS criminal Martin ‘The Viper’ Foley has been hired as a debt collector by a number of Carlow businesses who have demanded that their customers pay up. Sources have told The Nationalist that Foley, one of the country’s best-known criminals, is now operating a debt collection service and that a number of Carlow businesses facing mounting bad debts have ruthlessly decided to avail of his service. As the economic downturn bites, Foley and his cohorts have been calling to a number of individuals demanding payment, often up-front, with Foley taking a percentage of all debts recovered.
In the vast majority of cases, people pay up immediately.

The company - Viper Recovery and Repossession Services Ltd - is registered with the Companies Office and is based at an address in Crumlin, Dublin, with Foley listed among the directors of the company.

“You wouldn’t turn him down if he came calling,” said one source, who added that Foley has proved very successful in collecting outstanding debts.

Within the criminal underworld, Foley has gained considerable notoriety and has escaped several attempts on his life.

In fact, 56-year-old Foley has been shot on five different occasions, including most recently on 25 January 2008, when he was shot a number of times outside the Carlisle health and fitness club in Kimmage, south Dublin.

A garda source confirmed to The Nationalist that they are aware Foley is operating a debt collection and recovery service in the Carlow area and has acted on behalf of businesses in this region.

Foley’s business is a legitimate one and, with many businesses now feeling the pinch, more unscrupulous business people are using intimidating methods to recover bad debts.

What I find really intriguing about this - is this is a legitimate company. He pays taxes now. Very strange how things turn around. The IRA and Mafia are missing out on massive legal potential earnings ;);)

As somebody said in the other thread, giving these guys such cool nicknames is probably
half the problem (well a quarter maybe).

Instead of nicknaming him 'The Viper' the press should have called him 'Snuggles'.
Nobody's going to become a crime boss with a nickname like that.

So did anybody here ever use his services? I'd be afraid he'd take all the money and then tell you to go f*ck yourself!!! And then what could ya do:eek:

I find it intriguing, that he is 'allowed' to run what is technically a legal business. And paying taxes, PRSI, pensions, all this is very strange.

Surely he doesn't physically harm or threaten the people owing money. I suppose the fear is enough isn't it.

These people are usually paid commission and legally so what happens is a cheque is written to the person the debt is owed to and then the collector issues the sames person with an invoice which is paid for by a cheque.

A kinda legal way - good isnt it

That's very short-sighted. If you can't conceive a situation where a person could get into a bad debt situation through no fault of their own you're not thinking hard enough.

There used to be a piece of tat on bravo following debt collectors around in the UK, it's mind numbing work. However, with an ex scum like the viper RTE could have a ratings hit on the cards if they commissioned a fly on the wall piece.

I'm not sure I understand. So if somebody owed me E10K, and I hired the viper to get it at a commision of say, 10%, he would pay me a cheque for E11K, and then bill me for E1K? So I get my money, he gets his fee, and then the debtor owes the viper the rest. Is that it?

    not quite

first off you now owe the Viper 1K <cue scary music>

IIRC you either pay a comission so you get LESS than 10K when it gets paid
or you could sell the debt on and get a LOT less than 10K but you get it now

Yes, the company will not recoup the full 10K because of the charges owed to the debt collector. The debt collector agrees to purchase the debt from the company and take on all the risks associated with its collection for a certain % up front, thereby aiding cash flow to the business. The balance is paid over less the debt collectors commission.

Well if someones business burnt down i would feel sorry for the guy but i'd still expect to be paid (eventually) for the materials or goods i sold him .

Not paying your debts is one of the most dishonourable things a man can do in my book.

Hiring a scumbag to terrorise a family outside their home, instead of going through the courts is even more dishonorable in my book.

Only reason that scumbag is still alive is, because "coked out of their head freaks"" were sent to do the jobs on him.

My german shepards answer the door anyway...:)

How worried would you be, in fairness? Guy puts a finger on you and it ends up in court:

Yes judge, I am the well-known, former gangland figure, The Viper.

Yes, I did set up a debt-collection agency specifically named after my criminal nickname.

No, of course I didn't strike that man. Or threaten him.

What do you mean you're going to take the word of a local, politically-connected businessman over mine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,815 ✭✭✭✭galwayrush

Once a scumbag, always a scumbag. He obviously is using his notorious reputation as an intimidation tactic no matter how above board he portrays himself to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,560 ✭✭✭Wile E. Coyote

He has been running this business for a few years, it's only coming to public knowledge recently because it's been reported in a few papers.

Debt collection agencies are nothing new and he happens to run a very successful one. He will always be a criminal scumbag but if you ran a business that was going to the wall because people wouldn't pay their debts I'm sure a few of you would consider availing of his services.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,815 ✭✭✭✭galwayrush

I would be afraid that once you become involved with scumbags, you are caught in a trap, the way they operate could easily turn into protectionism.
