I hate Des Cahill, he should stick to radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

Meh, I could live with it. He's not Bill O'Herlihy by any means, but he'll get the job done. He's obviously very passionate about the GAA and sport in general, so let's just see how he gets on.

Very bad decision in this posters opinion - Cahill will ensure that this flagship GAA show is peppered with blokish "humour" poorly researched/ bumbling presentation and the absence of any opinions contrary to the GAA hierarchy.

The excellent Darragh Molony would be my choice..does a very professional job on the Boxing panels.

Lazy muppet RTE management afraid to go for real change...again.

Didn't do it for me as presenter..too much nervous gulping and poor breath control.

Displayed the common Kerry failing of trying to be too smart.

Give him the benefit of the doubt as a pannellist though..at least not afraid to put forward opinions however poorly thought out and grounded.

    Unlike that <snip> Cahill.

i think its a very good move for spillane, he was always excellent and very entertaining on the other side of the seat, but i think presenting just wasnt his cup of tea.

RTE's live match analysis has gone very dry and wooden since spillane and ger loughnane went, hopefully he will inject a bit of life to the show.

As for Des Cahill, for me a poor choice maybe they could have looked around a bit more, maybe it could have been offered to Matt Cooper, he did a very good job during the live matches on TV3.

One step forward two steps back eh (Bringing Spillane back, but bringing Cahill and Loughnane)

Think Des will do a Good Job .He does know his stuff about gaa and will be comfortable talk about both codes.

Good to have Pat back as a pundit at least he will get people talking about the sunday game again as he is bound to annoy a lot of people with his comments.

One Down side is the return of Ger Loughanne is 5 steps back imo.The man will waffle on for ages about how hurling is dying and bet he says i fancy clare to be the surprise team in the championship:D

Des has a great face for radio, but he didn't do to bad on the Road to Croker, so give him a chance.

we seem to have a new sensationalist in ourmidst, christ you dont hold back with the insults and punches. shame its complete nonsense.
at least not afraid to put forward opinions however poorly thought out and grounded.

    Anybody see the irony here?
    Unlike that dick Cahill.

    fantastic post. well done.
Didn't do it for me as presenter..too much nervous gulping and poor breath control.

the man plays in bout 10 all ireland finals and you think he gets nervous? one of the fittest men ever to play GAA and you think he cant control his breath?

this one is baffling, you get turned away for the job or something? is that you Pat Kenny?

Displayed the common Kerry failing of trying to be too smart.

    Bitter Much? Christ.

then you post this? that lad is awful, simply awful. at least i chuckled at this post anyway for about 10 seconds.

Personally, i used to listen des sunday evening shows and they were top class. having the likes of Spillane, Dara Cinnede, Mcstay, Tohill etc etc will make it a good line up and the hurling lads are good too.

Glad to see him go and be a pundit again, at least now we'll have a presenter who actually knows something - anything - about hurling. Sunday Game presenter needs to have a good knowledge of both sports and Spillane certainly didn't have that. He was a great pundit though, so it will be good to see him back there and able to express his opinions properly.

Banned for a week. That was totally uncalled for IMO.

I think Des Cahill deserves his chance to present the evening Sunday Game.Definitely has a good knowledge of both codes and he bailed out Pat Kenny when he was struggling in the Late Late Show GAA Special.Maybe this was part of the criteria RTE used.Spillane seemed a little out of debt when discussing hurling and got by by his general knowledge of the the game.

As for Darragh Maloney,I think he should be kept for presenting the Premiership on Saturday and the boxing as well as commentary for Friday nights in the Eircom League. He is the best commentator for GAA and deserves to commentate an All Ireland Final along with other games.

Des Cahill will be a better presenter than Spillane anyway. In every single show I have seen him present, at the end, when he was signing off he always got caught out by the change of camera. He (like Loughnane) has more to offer when he is on the panel. Michael Lyster is still the best man for the job though.

he done ok on the road to croker show should be given a fair chance.

Well he cant be much worse than Spillane.
Spillane back on the other side will be better. Is Brolly surviving?

Cahill will reduce the show to laddish repartee or what passes for repartee.

All we will get is sly digs and "in jokes" and how "de fellas" slip out for a smoke during training, hmmmph snooorttttt yeeeeh rooight.

Retrograde step in my opinion, way too biased, to much of the nudge nudge wink wink stuff.

    Won't be tuning in.

In fairness, I'm sure Cahill himself understands that the Sunday Game is a different kettle of fish. It's ok to be doing that kind of presenting when it's a laid back chat show like the Road to Croker, but this requires something different. And I'm sure RTE didn't hire him because they wanted to see his "humourous" style on the Sunday Game either.

Judging by Spillanes weaknesses, I assume they wanted someone with previous presenting experience and someone who obviously shares an affection for both codes.

And in that respect, they have their man.

Wasn't too gone on Matt Cooper on TV3. Didn't think his knowledge of the games was up to much.

I reckon Des Cahill is worth a go for one season. I think, with all due respects, it's time for a change from Pat Spillane. Could have suggested a few othwers too but let's give Des a chance.

Good points there and I just hope your judgement is right.

Dessie needs to understand he cannot please everyone on this programme and will have to ask a few hard questions and take a few controversial stands, something i think it's fair to say, he is not noted for.
I'll give him a chance but if he starts with the "in" digs and the blokeish stuff and ending anything approaching an arguament with "Anyway lads" the Flutt will prod the off button with his stout blackthorn!

Can't agree with this.We need people of the managerial calibre of Loughnane giving his opinions on these shows. It's good to have people who can talk about the overall team and managerial strategies etc because sometimes ex players cannot look beyond what individuals are doing on the pitch.

Well I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt when he first got the job, but he's doing absolutely nothing for me at the moment. Maybe he's just nervous or something, but he doesn't seem to have changed much from his Road to Croker days. Too much of that cheeky smile and a wink style going on, and a 5 year old could ask the questions he's been asking so far.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,366 ✭✭✭IIMII

Ah, give him time. I thought he did ok. First day in a big job, he's a nice guy that appreciates the GAA from a club up perspective, give him a chance

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Declan30

I agree give the Man a Chance. First Show of the Season. He will only Get Better.
Sunday Game was Good Last Night.
Even though None of the Pundits would go Against any of the Favourites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 583 ✭✭✭pipelaser

They needed a change from Spillane, but Jesus this is a terrible appointment.
Its not as if theyre just bringing in someone that theyre gonna try out for a season, they have seen enough of him over the years and obviously think that this is their man! He looks a state and is all over the place with his views, reckon the pundits facing him will give him a hard time, except Tohill.....
Anthony Tohill really really gets my goat aswell, hes a twit.

Daragh Maloney would have been the right man.

thought the highlights of the louth carlow game were disgraceful on it last night, they couldve done a proper package on it instead of the two minutes they showed.not des cahill's fault of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,872 ✭✭✭Cake Man

Yeah, would agree the highlights for the Louth and Carlow game was poor, wouldn't mind but there was only two games on yesterday anyway. Des Cahill wasn't too bad last night think he'll get better.

I thought he looked very nervous and found the constant waving of his hands in the air very bizarre and distracting.

The highlights of the Carlow-Louth game were very poor especially given the waste of time interviews that took up so much time instead.

    really cant stand des cahill
just means the sunday game is down a viewer

was pat pushed or did he ask for the transfer?

+1. Agreed. Considering how long the show was on for and the fact that there were only 2 games on yesterday (one of which was shown live), the 'highlights package' was an absolute joke. More time was spent showing footage from the team bus - having spent 45 minutes waiting to turn left at Whitehall, the last thing I needed to see was that feckin' road again!

pat wanted to get back into the analysis where he could express his opinion. pity i liked him presenting it. des cahill would put you to sleep watching him. dara o cinneide would have been perfect for that role, hes a good presenter, does it well on tg4. and whats with the massive chairs the guys are sitting in, way to big. daft looking.

Ah Des is alright. Met him once and he's a decent fellow. And he has a great first name ;)
