So I'm off for a month of traveling in a few months to North America and parts of South American and I want to get a suitable hat to try protect myself from the sun/any rain etc.

Up until now I've only ever wore baseball caps at various times on and off...generally while hill walking etc, so I'm abit uncertain abit getting an actual proper hat.

Thing that concerns mean is will I look like a tit with it on :pac:, is there general ideas/rules you should follow when looking for a cap that will suit you as a person and how the hell do you go about sizing the hat

This is what I would like....or something like it anyway

Obviously the best selection is available on-line (or atleast from what I've seen) but I'm guessing the very best way to choose a hat is to actually go to a shop and try them on....is there any suitable shops in Ireland I could go look at?

I never visit the tropics without my trusty boonie hat. It'll keep the sun off
the head and top of the ears (very common spot for sun cancer in men)
and is also useful if you get caught in a tropical downpour. It's also
foldable so you can tuck away in a bag or pocket.

You can get the normal wide brim or a narrower one.

Olive Green or khaki is probably best bet to avoid the GI Joe look.

Bonnie hat doesn't seem bad and is likely to be still practical for use in Ireland, cheap enough too

    Any other thoughts by people?

The "Hat Shop" on the ground floor in Stephens Green shopping centre does hats. Got a XXL sized "aussie" stlye hat for €70. Wore it over in France during Hellfest: head didn't get burned, nor did it get cold in the evenings. Great keeping my head dry in the rain over here as well, in those brief showers on the golf course.

The dude in the shop had a few different sizes, so was able to get one that was a very good fit. Ensure you get the leather lanyard, though. Saved me chasing the hat, when the wind tried to take it on the course.

It looks like the hat at the top of the page here.
