my mate has been working in the same job on contracts for 3 years now,
hes been on 6 month contracts at a time but has never been let go within the time hes been working there,
they have now sent him out a contract of indefinite duration in which he has not a clue what it means,

i myself thinks its the same as a permanent job or something along those lines,
can anyone on here shed some light on this please,

    cheers.

to be fair you should probably ask this in the work & jobs forum, but it sounds like he has a permanent job fair play to him.

The same contract except with no end point, so yeah, a permanent job on the same conditions.

That's a permanent contract. (It's also the terminology used in France, how I know).

As has been pointed out above a contract of indefinite duration is effectively what most people and many companies refer to as a 'permanent' job. In reality the only real difference is that should they decide to let your friend go they would have to pay him redundancy rather than just wait out his contract. Outside of the civil service, public service and certain semi-state companies there very few jobs that I'd actually refer to as 'permanent'.

    its in the public sector,
so is there a difference ?

The kind of 'permanent' I was referring to is where someone has a classic civil service style job where they're basically employed until they retire with an extraordinarily low chance of ever being let go. If your friend was in one of those 'permanent' jobs they'd know it. The fact that they're in the public service is likely to make their job quite secure though.

Several different areas of the public sector that I am aware of use the term "contract of indefinite duration" as opposed to permanent, it's terminology more than anything else being different.

    It's permanent.

And if you've been on fixed-term (ie temporary) contracts that keep on getting renewed more more than a certain time (4 years I think), you are automatically entitled to a "contract of indefinite duration". So your friends company are simply doing what they should. (And fair play to them: lots try to get away without doing it).

Something to note: if you're on a fixed-term contact, you are NOT required to serve it out before you leave, you are only required to serve the notice period that's named in the contract. In the same way, they don't have to keep you for the entire period: they can also let you go provided they give the notice period in the contract.

I've seen too many people turn down better jobs because they mistakenly believed that they had to serve out their temp contract. Employers like to encourage this belief, but unless they're paying real contract rates (ie self-employed workers managing their own PAYE and getting decent rates for it), it's just not true.
