Your ideas for an Irish product

I'm not doing one of those 'lets start our own' discussions, but I'm find of inspired by the discussion that kicked off in page 136 of the 'Irish Promotions' sticky on how a particular poster would make their promotion work.

The forum seems to have several people with plenty of ideas for making a wrestling promotion work in this country, and it would be interesting to listen to them in earnest!

So here's my two cents for kicking off - the universities and I.T.s. Several of them (AFAIK TCD and UCD and more) hve boxing societies with their own rings. Would it be feasible to cut a deal with these societies where the promotion would put on a show and the society would get a cut of the gate? It'd allow you to cordon off two of your biggest outlays - ring and venue - as a percentage of your earnings, making the other factors (talent and insurance) a bit more affordable.

Using the Unis would mean there's a big chunk of punters on-site (certainly more 18-25 year olds than most decent-sized towns) who'd be up for trying something different. You could then have a good adult-oriented product with the focus on proper wrestling. There'd also be less pressure in this model to get a big ex-WWE name in. Instead, you'd put mid-card Irish guys who can have a decent match (Vic Viper level, say) and write a two-hour show that gives room for proper characterisation.

Once a term in 5 locations gives you 15 shows in a year, more than enough to see if it's catching on enough (or breaking even) to push the idea further. The logical extension, as I see it then, is getting a ring and taking it to the summer festivals after year two - you've gotta admit, a wrestling show at electric picnic would be something!

So come on with ideas/evaluations/ investment!

Boxing rings are not the same as wrestling rings

And you probably won't find a group of people more against pro wrestling than boxers :pac:

The festival idea isn't bad though. I know that when IWW (or was it a different promotion?) did some matches as part of ITT's fresher week they got a good response. Putting on a small show as part of some bigger occasion where people are more likely to have an open mind about it should work. I don't know how far you could run with that though

The ITT show you mentioned was an NWA Ireland & NLW co promoted venture, & was honestly one of the best atmospheres for a show I've ever seen. Same goes for NWA Ireland at ITB.

College shows are a defo thumbs up

A European equivalent? As in a promotion with European wrestlers that has worldwide tv?

Never been tried before, but that's only because the promotion's can never get decent tv deals in their own countries and can't come anywhere near close enough to having the sort of money to be any sort of equivalent to WWE

Well yeah, like a European Wide promotion which tours Europe just like WWE tours the USA.

Hah its a pipe dream just something I've thought of every so often.

Excellent idea but as said above, the tv deals just aren't the same.

If you had the money yourself or had investors then it's possible it could take off.

It's really all about getting the idea up and running and having the moolah to back it up.

We're kinda doing this over at AWR :)
Although I don't believe any promotion will ever get to the same level as the WWE in a hurry.

Are you guys actively seeking TV other than the odd French spot?

Indeed but we're a very young company still. Our first shot on French TV came when we were less than a year old which is a great accomplishment for us. Everything takes time but of course all promotions are always "actively seeking" TV spots.

Cool. Are there any plans for AWR DVD distribution in the mean time?

Yes, AWR has plans for a national release of future DVDs, They will be available in HMV, Tower records etc, However this would be later in the year

Wow, that is pretty big. Quite the distribution deal you got there.

I was thinking to myself that a lot of smaller indies support themselves on DVD sales with no names on the card, and AWR with the likes of RVD would probably make a tidy profit with internet sales internationally. But the last thing I was expecting was for you to have distribution in big commericial chains this early.

That was always my main quarrel with the Irish product, in that it wasn't accessible if you didn't attend the live show. At least it sounds like you are trying to remedy that.

Fair play on that, and for answering direct questions.
