    Review here
In the last 5 years, I tried many close ear headphones but none of them can beat the Sennheiser HD201. Honestly, I believe that this is the best sounding headphones under 100$.

Got them myself yesterday. Im no audiophile but they sound really great, are comfortable and block out external noise very well (leaves me open to people sneaking up behind me to scare me though!)

I dont think i could use any over the head headphones in public! There is also the safety aspect to take into consideration, cars that you cant hear hurt just as much as ones you can :P

Mymemory are not too unlike play.com, they have free shipping but they are based in jersey so are liable for import duty for orders over €22

So if you wanted to buy 3 of these you would be better off buying seperately

I must be one of few who is unimpressed with the HD201's. Sound seems poor compared to my no-big-brand Koss UR40's.

Thanks OP - will do quite nicely for work :)

Everyone's preferences when it comes to headphones will differ. I usually find that a good way to get a general idea if something is decent is to read the reviews of people who actually purchased, especially reviews from the larger e-tailers like Amazon or Newegg. Here are those two links:

    Amazon.co.uk
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B0007XJSQC/ref=cm_cr_pr_recent?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending

    Newegg.com
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16826106455

The reviews are quite good, and the risk is low given the price. I bought a pair, and if I am not happy they can always make a nice birthday gift !

Saw this thread this pm and, having needed good over-ear portable headphones for ages, I was lead to this:

    http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Portable-Headphones/Koss/Koss-PortaPro-Headphones

Seem to be a classic, great reviews and at the best price I could find.

Went with these ones - lifetime warranty and great reviews for the last 20+ years... Hopefully I won't need to be buying 4 euro earphones from dealextreme for for next 20 ;)

Got to say - naft look on the Koss phones though (not surprising since they are literally from the 80's)...but if it sounds good...

Glad I'm not the only one that made this choice - was beginning to wonder!

They do look a bit naff but I don't really care - as you say, if they sound good... Indeed, if they attract negative opinion from fashion nazis - so much the better. They can be a "conversation piece".

Mine were reportedly shipped today. I've checked more reviews since ordering and these 'phones seem to be very highly regarded and good value at the price we got.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Yup - in fact I spotted some guy wearing them on the street today... and it doesn't look that naff (from a distance at least! ;) ) Apparently the metal bands do tend to catch hair though.

Mine's been shipped - awaiting with trepidation...now I'm just hoping I'm not overhyping my expectations after reading all the glowing reviews.

Mine (Koss) were shipped on 27th too - haven't got them yet. Glad to hear they don't look too bad from a distance! Hope we're not caught for VAT. I just realised yesterday that at E23 odd, they're just over the VAT exempt limit of E22. Mymemory seem to ship from the Channel Islands which is outside the EU.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Yes - but I believe the "goods of negligible value" tax calculation works out to be 21% of whatever is above 22 euro...i.e. 1.43 euro. Not the largest amount of tax to be paid if they do charge it.

Glad to hear that. My understanding is that it's the appropriate Irish VAT rate on the entire value if that exceeds E22, not on the excess over E22. We'll find out soon if we're caught! An Post normally charge E5 for collecting tax/duty. Other delivery services charge up to the E15 max allowed by the EU, regardless of amount of tax/duty collected.

Here is the relevant tax regulation:
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/customs/leaflets/pn1179.html
    1. Introduction

When goods are imported into, or received in Ireland, from a country outside the European Community (EC) they are liable to import charges (Customs Duty, Anti-Dumping, Countervailing and Excise Duties where applicable and VAT) at the point of importation. However, in certain cases relief from import charges arises because :

    * the amount of import charges is small and is not collected below certain levels (see paragraph 2);
    * the item being imported is of negligible value (see paragraph 3); or
    * the goods are gifts which are consigned to a private individual living in Ireland (see paragraph 4).

This Guide outlines the relief available, how it may be obtained and the procedures which apply in order to obtain it.

It is important to note that there are separate reliefs available for travellers who wish to import goods with them on return from abroad and these differ from those described below. Full details of reliefs for travellers are set out in the Information leaflet for Travellers arriving in Ireland from non-EC Countries who are importing goods purchased for personal use.

    2. Non-collection of Small Amounts of Import Charges

Where the customs duty on a consignment of goods amounts to less than €10 it will not be collected. Similarly, VAT liability amounting to less than or equal to €6 will not be collected. No similar rule applies in the case of excise duty which will always be collected if the goods are liable to excise duty.

    3. Consignments of Negligible Value

Consignments not exceeding an intrinsic value of €150 may be imported without payment of Customs Duty, while consignments not exceeding a total value of €22 may be imported without payment of VAT. (Intrinsic value is the value of the goods alone, and does not include insurance and freight.) However, it should be noted in particular that there is no relief (from Customs Duty, VAT or Excise duty) under this negligible value provision for importations of tobacco, tobacco products, alcohol products, perfumes or toilet waters irrespective of their value.

Seems like VAT under 6 euro won't be charged either... and 21.5% of 23.40 euro is only 5.03 euro ;)

Got my KOSS headphones too...yeah it's a lot better than my cheapos from dealextreme (I can actually hear new parts in Hotel California). :)

Delivery was very quick for me - shipped on the 27th, received on the 1st.

Same here and sound/comfort is even better than I expected from reviews. Online reviews can sometimes have an element of "the king's new clothes" about them. But I suppose after 25 years of production the truth will out.

Thanks Thirdfox for the VAT info - I'm surprised they don't collect under E6 - I'd have expected they'd just raise the exemption limit. The Revenue can work in mysterious ways. The invoice/delivery note was interesting, I thought ;).

And many thanks to OP for drawing my attention in this direction, even though I didn't buy the item you had spotted.

    Ordered a pair there.

Was so diappointed with the cx200 II's I got but I am thinking I justy don't like the sound of the in-ears.

    Giving sen another chance!

Just to chip in, I got a pair of these from Peats on Dame street for like 20-25 euro about a year ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,238 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Cool, and what did you think?

The ones I quoted above were my first in ear (like proper in) earphones I have tried and am not impressed at all.

These here will be my first earmuff style pair.

I can't see how you're going to get any better for under 50 euro tbh. Ears tend to get a little sweaty after like 3-4 hour stretches but the sound quality is distrinctly Sennheiser, even at the bargain basement end of the scale.

Just to add that Peats are doing 10% off all their headphones at the moment. Not a massive discount but every little helps.

Bought a pair of these and while they lack in style, they definitely make up for it in sound quality!

I had my doubts of Koss having good headphones, but I've been proven wrong. There's a nice bass off them. Suffice to say, I'm very impressed. It's worth getting your hair pulled by the band for the sound quality :)

    Yep.. definitely worth the bump.

Would be buying these myself if I already didn't have a wireless set of Sony cans, and wired set of Sony cans barely in use.

    Great deal!

It's all a matter of opinion.. but they're chalk and cheese!

Both budget models.. but the Ai-M9's are an in-ear headphone whereas the HD-201's are cans.

I'd wear the Ai-M9's for walking down the street listening to iPod, whereas the HD-201's would be used for listening to music in my home or office.

EDIT: witnessmenow beat me to it!
