Seems there are plans afoot to set up a sea plane service from Galway docks to the Arann Islands, Foynes and possibly Dublin. The service is hoped to begin in February after getting the go ahead from the IAA. Could interesting, but I think the killer could be the weather as it will be very much weather dependant. This is the story in the Irish Times.

Hey was the pilot an Irish Canadian by any chance ?

Seaplanes or floatplanes are huge business in places like Maldives, Alaska or Canada.
    Arán islands ?
I suppose they could use amphibians and divert them to the airfields like other guys ?

I am not allowed discuss …

That's just a small selection of planes in that area, there were many, many more. All I remember about the pilots is that they were too cool to talk to anyone else but their colleagues and most sounded Australian.

It's a very nice idea but in reality any aircraft on floats would be very restricted by weather, especially in the Aran Islands.

Apparently a twotter is the aircraft of choice.

Actually a single Otter was mentioned which would be interesting. Weather is an issue but Aer Arann get on quite well and they would only land in sheltered harbours not open sea. I wonder would Lough Atalia be long enough? Imagine it, hotel patrons from the 'G' boarding their Otter and heading off for a scenic flight or out onto one of the many lakes.

I hope it takes off, we have plenty of water. I wouldn't mind a job like that.

I think it's a great idea! Fantastic heritage regarding seaplanes in that part of the world. Also, for tourism, it's a huge attraction. I think it will suceed if it gets the go ahead. Glasgow have something similar that is based in the docks there....
