Pay VRT today, tax next month?

Anyone know if I can register a car this month (sept) and pay the VRT but not actually tax it until October. Seems a waste to pay a months tax for only 6 days of the month, especially as the car won't be used on the road for Sept. If it legally needs to be taxed I'll go and do it, but if I can at a week that makes more sense.

You owe tax from the first day of the month that you register the car. So if you registered it on 31/09/2009 you would have to pay for the full month of September. The only way you can legally escape this is register your car this month, transport your car on a flatbed to the VRT office and VRT it, transport the car to your driveway (or anywhere off the public road). Fill in the form for the tax on the 1st of October declaring that the car was off the road and have the form stamped by a Garda and tax the car from October

Maybe a bit easier to just pay the tax from the 1st of September... ;)

Can you hold off VRT'ing the car for 6 days?

I know the rule is next working day etc, but there are circumstances where you need to gather the docs and hence can't register the car.

Of course without a good backup story you run the risk of getting your car impounded!

Dont tax it untill the start of next month, use the form that the guards have to stamp to say you havnt used it on the road, which you already haave said you wont be.So all should be cool.

Suppose I could do that as its perfectly true. I don't think its likely the VRT staff will want to see the car as their online calculator quotes the minimum payable of €720, so I might just not drive it to the office at all.

Whats the first date of registration of the car? And whats engine size?

I've registered cars in Tallaght and Navan and didn't have to produce the car in either case.

Someone suggested previously to drop in 15 minutes before closing - seems to speed things up apparently. All you have to do is sign a declaration in a garda station subsequently to declare the car off the road for the few days in question.

    What did you buy?

I didn't take that scenario into account! Of course it is perfectly fine to have the car off the road and not pay road tax until you get it on the road for the first time. Let us know how you're getting on!

    +1 :D

Search is disabled atm, but from memory, wasn't it some sort of Merc? Obviously younger than 30 years - was it an W123 coupe?

Thanks chaps, all useful advice, and apologies for the delay in replies, UPC to blame.

I'll pop over this afternoon and do the deed, although last time I arrived 10 minutes before they close the doors at 4pm I had a massive row with the ignorant moron in charge of the Tallaght VRT office as he decided it was near enough to closing time to try and not let me in. He was shouting and roaring while I remained calm and polite, I prevailed on the day after requesting his name to lodge a complaint with the Revenue. The other staff didn't seem too fond of him either.

I did indeed buy an old Merc, but not as old as I was looking for! Stumbled across a 1984 190E, one of the very first imported to the UK, with 34k miles and 1 owner in mint condition, looks like it drove out of the dealership last week. I had a '92 190, now sold, and as I knew I liked them and had invested a fair bit of time learning the ins and outs of at least some of them I though it was worth a shot. Not a proper classic but getting there..

It was actually bought from Cheshire Classic Benz by a chap during the summer for mad money of about £4700 I'm told, he then spent another £500 or so on an alarm, proper MB mats and another service. He then saw an SLK with practically no mileage and traded the 190 against it. The guys in the SLK garage don't usually deal in cars this old so they just wanted the trade-in price back again. Apparently they had more calls about it than any of their standard stock, but I was quicker off the mark than other interested parties! All stories checked out so I believe its all above board.

    I paid less than £5000 obviously :D

Have an occasional low idle speed to sort out but don't think its anything major, and the recently installed alarm has upset the electric windows a bit (think this is just a switch needs reversing). Other than that its in practically new condition, one tiny chip mark on the roof that was repaired years back and an '80's radio/cassette to replace are all I find wrong with it.

Thanks 245, and in particular for all the advice you kindly offered during my search. I did chop and change a bit and probably compromised quite a bit in the end, but I intend to keep this one for a long as is practical. Managed to sell my previous 190E quite quickly this time too, in fact I had 2 buyers offering deposits.

Oh, and paid the VRT today, even the girl in the office suggested waiting until October and declaring it off road for the next week! So guess I'll be doing that then.

I wouldn't see it as being that much of a compromise. Its got all the classic attributes in terms of heritage and design. Its design in particular has aged very well - its more attractive than subsequent models and it has the benefit of being a true Mercedes in terms of build quality. I think that you made the right choice.
