(Apologies but I couldn't think of a suitable sub-forum to put this in, so ended up here instead)

Does anyone know how I would go about renting/hiring/borrowing (or even buying if cheap but I dobht it) some form of instrument to measure Db/noise levels in the general environment. Its for an article I'm writing and will involve (hopefully depending on size of instrument) covertly measuring the level of noise in a couple of areas. Any advice appreciated and anyone who is good enough to loan me one (we could work something out in the form of a deposit by me even) will get a thanks in the article. Reply here or pm me. Cheers

Maplins also have them to buy - for example: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=46362

Well, there's some form of instrument to measure Db/noise levels in the general environment on third....

    (this never gets old!!)

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Who has comissioned the writing of this report? If it's an official body, they should have one you can borrow. If you're going up against an official body ask one of the lab suppliers in the Golden Pages. But really, if it's the latter reason you need the measurements for, you might have to consider asking an environmental monitoring company (also in the Golden Pages) to carry out the measurements for you. But you'd have to pay them for that. Because if you've never used one before and you want your results to ruffle a few feathers, you'll need to prove categorically that the person who took the measurements knew what he was doing. Otherwise it's a complete waste of your time because they'll say that the measurements are not reliable due to operator inexperience.

Dogging is getting awfully high-tech these days.

We use to use them in college, so my advice is to break into a media department of a college and liberate one!

If you have access to an iphone there is a free app that does this. I dont know how accurate it is.

There's another app that can measure the accuracy of the first app, think that's free too.

Well its not an official body so to speak, but I take your point, and it may require a re-think. Thanks Hydroquinone and everyone else for the mostly helpful comments!

its called an audio dosemeter. Lots of factories make their employees wear badge versions to ensure they are not going deaf. Both esa and ohsa have pretty strict guidelines on sound levels. Im sure the epa would help you out too.

Also sci=>eng in the dropdown menu for that kinda nonsense.

My friend works in a lab where they use these all the time. He's really obliging. He'll lend you one for free and show you how to use it. Don't worry about a deposit, he'll even give you spare batteries. While you're there, he'll give you a quick tour. They've a nice canteen there and, knowing him, he'll buy you lunch. If you travel there by taxi, keep yoour receipts. He'll claim the money from his boss and give it back to you.

Just ask for Barry. He's the Ultra-Sound guy.
