GSM-based alarm and CCTV

I've been asked to look into the possibility of installing a home security system in a house situated in a fairly remote location. There is no fixed telephone line at the house, but the owners would like to install something with a built-in cellphone that would text/call them whenever the alarm is activated.

Also, they want to know if it would be possible to install some sort of CCTV system that could send snapshots of various rooms and the exterior of the house on request.

I'd appreciate any advice or recommendations you may have. I've had a quick look at the HKC GSM-M product, has anybody here had any experience of it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi TskTsk,

Most alarm systems can have a GSM fitted to it for self monitoring. With the HKC GSM you can self monitor and remotely access your panel. E.g get verified alarm signals from the alarm, set, unset, partarm, turn on lights, open gates but this only works with there HKC alarm panel.

There is a CCTV system that can do what you are asking but it is very expensive. If they had broadband in the house they could do this cheaper by connecting there CCTV system to the internet and remotely access the pictures when the alarm activates.

I couldn't get full 3G service, just EDGE, so I'm not sure if it'd be fast or stable enough for these purposes.

Sounds like wired/sat broadband might be the way to go for the pictures/vids.

Would have to agree if you want it to be reliable..

I've set up a remote vieweing solution over the internet. I have 3 cameras in and around the house. Because I'm remote I've only got 1Mb download and 128k upload. To minimise data trx, I've got teamviewer running on a PC in the attic. That PC is running Panasonic NVR software and I can then acces the PC over the internet and see the 3 cameras.

You can get software from milestone which acts as a recording and viewing/controlling hub for IP cameras. They have capacity to view on compatible handsets such as iPhone. That might be a solution for you. But obviously, they'd need 1Mb or over on a fixed line or sat as previously mentioned by others. However I think upload on sats is rubbish if non existant. In fact, I think there may be no upload on sat?
