WGB - The impact of it being destroyed ?

    Hey,

As a first year Computer Science student, I'm a bit concerned. Apparently all of the computers inside the building are destroyed, and all of the servers are gone too, destroying all of my work so far to date.

We won't be able to have labs for the next 3 months whilst the building is closed.

Rumours are flying about that we'll have loads of night time lectures for the next 3 months, in addition to having to play catch-up over the Summer holidays.

I'm worried. Anyone have any idea what might happen ? Whatever it is, its not gonna be good :(

I dont think things are as bad as you've been hearing. From what I hear the servers were on the 2nd/3rd floors so theyre fine, the biggest problem is that the majority of the transformers powering the building were damaged (except one i think) and that these take a month or 2 to fix.

The only reason the servers are down now I think is because they have no power. Considering last year UCC didnt have this building for use I cant imagine its too big a job to move things temporarily back to the way they were last year (i.e. moving comp sci students back to the kane basement and food science building) for a few months until everythings back working in WGB. Find night lectures unrealistic - things arent that bad, and as for catch up over summer holidays, us 3rd yrs will be on placement then so no i dont think so.

the servers are on the second floor, so they shouldn't have been damaged by the water. hopefully they didn't suffer any electrical damage.

I did hear that the water didn't reach the pcs in the ground floor.

don't panic just yet, hang on till the official word starts to come through.

we were told there's a 6 week lead time on the big transformers.

or network. if the cabling into the building is damaged it may need to be redone.

it was a big job moving down, moving back isn't all that easy.
not all of the room CS left are still there as we left them - many of the offices have been occupied by other depts now.
plus much of block E is under construction to become the new HR section.

That's a pity, I wouldn't have minded going back up to Food Science Block E, as much as I love the new building I miss those labs for reasons I cannot explain :)

I suppose they will have to replace the carpets as well? It would probably be reaking in there otherwise. With all that equipment down on top of them I can imagine that will be a nightmare job.

I suppose they will have to replace the carpets as well? I

carpets, wiring, plasterboard walls, floor tiles, everything. clean out the ventilation systems and god knows what else.

the lab pcs did survive, which is great. the water didn't reach them and they were moved up onto the desks as a precaution.

I should have an update on the place tomorrow, they were pumping the basement clear today. Once that's done they can check the state of the main transformer(s). If they survived it should be a short term job, if not, it's a long term one.

I don't even know if I can go into work Monday :)

I did computer science last year and as disgusting as the Kane building is, I liked the our Lab alot for some reason, twas cosy! I think it was called E4? It was at the top of the food science building I tink.

I'm sure it wont be a huge deal to continue lectures back on the main campus and maybe move computers over and survive without squirrelmail for a while.

It is a pity about the flooding in the WGB thought. I live in Vic Mills beside it and it was sad to watch all the water flooding into it Thursday night. It has to be the unluckiest building ever. Its had lots of problems since it opened a few months ago. I hope things get back to normal soon because it's a really nice building and its a shame to see it getting damaged!

    Here is the update

FLOOD DAMAGE AT UCC - UPDATE
    22.11.2009
UCC staff and contractors under the direction of the Office of Buildings & Estates, have continued to work throughout the weekend to recover buildings and equipment damaged in the unprecedented flooding of recent days. The following is a brief summary of the situation as of noon on Sunday:
    Victoria Lodge/Castlewhite/University Hall
All ground floor apartments have been badly water damaged. A major clean up is underway. The basement of UH (power centre, storage, 2 remaining cars) will be pumped out tomorrow to allow further review. Power supply should be available to CW/LH early next week.

    Glucksman
The Lewis Glucksman Gallery has suffered extensive flood damage to its basement area. The basement area houses the art stores, a major plant area and the kitchens. The recovery operation is underway and the gallery team is working closely with conservation experts on site. The main exhibition spaces were not affected but the gallery will remain closed until futher notice.

    Western Road Houses
There is significant ground floor damage. Department staff are on site sorting documentation etc. Carpets have been stripped and dehumidification/cleaning is underway. It is hoped to have the upper floors available for Monday.

    North Mall
There is significant damage to ground floor offices, teaching rooms and labs. All departments are busy on site sorting material. Strip-out of carpets and dehumidification/cleaning etc, has commenced. All departments are co-operating on trying to relocate staff temporarily on site. The water supply is off at present and a temporary supply may be needed. The power supply has been restored. We hope to allow occupation of upper floors for Monday. Significant further work will be necessary.

    Western Gateway
The basement has been pumped out and clean up/drying out of transformer/panels has commenced. The power supply/heating is on critical path to allow reoccupation of upper floors. Surveys have commenced and a major review has been scheduled for Monday am. The main auditorium will need complete rebuilding. Carpets are being removed from labs/teaching rooms and clean up of sub-floor is underway.

    Connolly
There is damage to open access labs, teaching rooms etc. Clean up has commenced.

    Tyndall
Clean up nearing completion. It should be possible to reoccupy the complex tomorrow, Monday. Major equipment items will be assessed next week.

Work will continue tomorrow, Monday and further updates will be posted to this site.

The entire main area has to be rebuilt they said though ! I'd say that could be a bit of a balls, what with the ground, skirting boards, painting stairs carpets , seats, etc. Hopefully the main transformer was more of an Optimus Prime than a Bumblebee, at least. Apparently as long as that's working its not too bad !

Maybe while UCC are raping their insurance company they can use the leftover money to throw in a few bloody windows, like...maybe tier the lecture rooms a bit...get a few decent blackboards....;)

I seriously hope not! If they do the dog on the insurance, it will go up, because these floods are gonna be likely again according to some experts. If its gonna cost the college more to insure themselves, who do you think will get the cost?? Anyway, they are only insured for the damage, nothing more, so it isn't possible to do the dog on it!

Saw a guy on the news whose business got flooded in 2003 in Galway, his insurance for that year was €4,000, and he claimed for the flood damage. His insurance premium for the next year was €32,000.

Its a harsh one to take - the info would be brilliant, any chance you could take a few photos of the place?

I thought they would of had a second server on campus so we could access our email and lectures notes through that..Seems not though!

It's good news that none of the Lab PC's were damaged as I'd assume that would of added another job that needed quite alot of time to sort out..

Hopefully Monday the 30th it'll be all up and running :)

ok - predictions are looking good. at this point it looks like the building will open again Monday 30th. Thursday we should have a more definite prediction.
Looks like we got away very lightly.

I must say a huge thanks to everyone that's working flat out to deal with this situation - from the CS staff to the building staff, admin staff and all the other people who popped in to help.

I finally went in for a look this morning.
It's still a construction site - so you have to sign in and be escorted around. I think the heating and power are working, but the cooling isn't working so the building isn't fully powered up yet. They hope to do that tomorrow. They're replacing the floor tiles and the floor voids are being dried out in all the downstairs rooms.
I didn't hear any further official news - I think that they may well open monday, but it's likely to be a reduced service - with some stuff still closed and plenty of work still to do.
It's a horrible sight to be honest - our lovely clean new building all manky.
Brilliant work by all the people working to fix it though, they're performing miracles.

Just saw this on the UCC site:

    Western Gateway Building:
This building will re-open on the November 30th 2009. A temporary generator/boiler will be in place. The rebuilding of the basement plant room will continue in the coming months. G.05 (main auditorium) will be out of action until after Christmas. Activities planned for this room have been rescheduled to other venues across campus http://timetable.ucc.ie

Just some info I found - FAQ about the flood

    Flood Damage: Frequently Asked Questions

    Was the flood expected?
No, the flood last Thursday (19/11/09) was an unprecedented event that significantly exceeded any previous recorded flood in the UCC campus since the construction of the Inniscarra Dam in the 1950’s. Following a major flood in the city in 1986, a study projected flood levels along the course of the River Channels for a 1:250 year event. All UCC’s recently constructed buildings were placed above the flood level at the relevant locations.

The old Greyhound Track and Lower Grounds are prone to flooding, according to the available data – why build there in the first place?
The Greyhound Track regularly flooded prior to UCC’s development of the site. The building was constructed at a level two metres higher than the original ground level. In relation to the Glucksman, the building was constructed over a metre higher than the lower ground and 200-300mm higher than protective berm on the bank of the river. The buildings were designed and constructed above projected flood levels. The floods experienced last Thursday were extraordinary and affected all recently constructed building in the west of the city including County Hall, Kingsley Hotel, etc., and other areas never previously flooded. As an example, the ground level of the Glucksman was set at 3.31m AOD approximately 300mm above the projected flood level given in the above study. The levels of the flood water were approximately one metre above the finished floor level.

What process was involved in the decision to go ahead at these two sites?
All capital projects go through a rigorous design and planning process. External experienced design engineers are part of an overall design team who prepare designs, undertake environmental analysis and submit projects for approval to the local authority. The planning authority scrutinise all project details based on their overall knowledge of the surrounding environs prior to granting planning permission.

Was expert opinion sought specifically on the potential danger of flooding at the sites?

The project designs include experienced consultant engineers with significant experience of construction projects in the city and its environs. Environmental report\statements are prepared as part of the design process which challenge the suitability of site selection.

Given the historic danger of flooding and numerous previous examples, was consideration given to putting the Western Gateway on stilts?
The building was constructed well above any previous recorded flood level on the site. The overall design solution for any project must take into account building access, visual impact, security etc., and the best available data in finalising a design solution.

What was the rationale behind allowing basement areas to be used for art storage/expensive equipment in Glucksman and Western Gateway Building?

It is common practice to use basement areas for plant and storage areas. These areas are tanked to a high specification for protection against the ingress of ground water. As stated above, the floor levels are set above historical flood levels for the site.

Will policy on basement usage now be reviewed and will new contingency plans be prepared?
The recent flood event changes everything. It is difficult at this stage to draw conclusions with regard to the cause of the flood. The Office of Public Works are finalising a new a River Lee CFRAMS (Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management Study) which will establish the likely impacts of global warming, changes in land use etc, and will recommend long term strategies for the management of flood risk in Cork City. This report and an analysis of the event in the last week will inform future UCC strategy.

ah it's good to be back. apart from some missing carpet tiles you'd barely know the place was a disaster site last week.
