I remember an old tv mini series on RTE 1 causing a hoopla, Richard Chamberlain and some hot Aussie bird getting it on....wasn't he a priest or summit?

The Thorn Birds. I think he played a priest who had an affair. With an adult, incredibly enough.

Oz was pretty controversial. Spooning, male rape and biting down on a mans penis being some of the highlights.

    Very good tv show though.

I remember 'The Spike'. You got to see the side of a woman's breast (in an art class) about 5 yards away, through a pot plant.

Some oul' lad from the League of Decency was compelled to check it out so much he had a heart attack.

I don't think they came more controversial than Brass Eye.

    Remember their "Paedofile Special"?

    Ouch!

That's what immediately sprung to mind as soon as I saw the title thread. Sketch show Jam also by Chris Morris had its share of disturbing controversial sketches.

Not quite as controversial, but Derren Brown's Russian Roulette live caused quite a stir also. Come to think of it Channel 4 is awesome for the risque t.v!!

    What's controversial about spooning?

Yeah they are indeed. Wasnt there a live Autopsy on Channel 4 a while back or something? Mayeb i'm imagining it?

This thread made me think of Brass Eye so went straight to You Tube, i forget how brilliant it was. Chris Morris is quality.

I love(d) his Denholm Renholm character in The I.T. Crowd too

Wasn't the dude French or German or..something?
That was an interesting show cutting up loads of bodies. Educational!
The audience always looked horrified. Wasn't best to watch it while eating your dinner though....

I didn't mean the spooning as in lying down together. I was referring to the placing of a spoon up someones arse.

I had irregular eating patterns so I may have been having my dinner at midnight and then supper at 3am....

    :o

'Oz' is probably the only show where even the opening credits would have to be rated 18s....

'Brass Eye' though definitely deserves a nod for both the paedophile special (they're closer to crabs than humans you know) and cake ("cake is a made-up drug").

'Queer as Folk' was graphic:eek:. I remember 'Oranges are not the only fruit' being talked about as being shocking. Lesbians or something.

    Queer As Folk
    Excellent choice.

    Have the box set.
The Mother would have had a heart attack had she known such a show was on her telly.

This is what I always understood spooning as. Spoon for sex? How does that work? Actually, don't tell me. I prefer my cute, cuddly, uncorrupted version of spooning.

The Cracker series filmed in Manchester about brilliant, but drunken and over weight criminal psychologist "Fitz" Fitzgerald, played by Robbie Coltrane, dealt with several taboo and controversial topics. Saw the reruns on public telly not too long ago.

The Savage Eye is very, very true...to the point that I am surprised it hasn't caused some sort of controversy yet...

I'd recommend seeing a doctor about that.

Very little tv grabs the front page of the Mail these days alas. There are no more taboos.

Roddy Doyle's "Family" stirred up some tuttuting back in the early 90's. Maybe controversy was a bit strong but it certainly had people talking and brought a few taboo subjects into the light. Charlo FTW.

The Cops, from BBC2 late 90's was mysteriously pulled during a paedophile story, and has never been released by the BBC on DVD (even though it won several awards). There were rumours at the time that the show was pulled due to objections by manchester police force, because it showed up officers in a bad light. Excellent show.

Father Ted created a bit of controversity in the states. Wasn't it baned in Boston?

Also, South Park has had a number of controversial episodes. But nothing really big in the last couple of seasons. Last big one I remember was the Tom Cruise one where it wasn't shown over here.

Star Trek had an episode which was banned by the BBC for years because there's a 30 second conversation near the beginning of the episode which references the IRA succeeding in uniting Ireland in the 21st century.

Oz was a fantastic show. The HBO website had a dedicated page which listed out the characters and the characters killed each season. Seasons 1 - 5 had 10 + characters killed off, but season 6 killed off something like 28. It was an unusual show in that when a new character was introduced you never knew if they would make it as far as the credits.

Faux-controversy. It's not really saying anything too out there at all.

Now when Miley had that roll in the hay with Fidelma. That was controversial!

The Pall Bearer's Revue, Jerry Sadowitz's show which has never been repeated.

The second programme that popped into my mind (after 'that episode' of Brasseye) was The Word... featuring such controversy as Kurt Cobain telling the crowd that Courtney was 'the best fcuk in the world', Oliver Reed plastered performing 'Wild Thing' and some girl going full fontal whilst singing and Lynne Perry making an absolute ar*se of herself... and of course there was the 'I'd do anything to be on telly' section with a young fella snogging a (very) old woman, people getting sick into a pint glass and drinking it etc.. etc.. highly digusting but somehow compulsive viewing!!..

    The Word.

Channel 4 once again. Got to love that station :)

The BBC got 55,000 complaints over Jerry Springer: The Opera but this dropped
after it was aired. Celeb Big Brother has the record now with 55,000+.
