No didn't know that, and I was kinda thinking I might be alone in that respect!

Yeah I like that album The Last Broadcast, especially that 2nd track 'Words'.

I'd say you are. Although i only know it because of my rock music background and it was all that was ever written about doves when they first came out.

great band - knew they'd done some early 'dance' stuff - didn't realise they did that last track you posted!

Booka Shade made their millions originally producing french pop tracks (late 90's I think). Thats about the best I can do, tis also common knowledge

I knew the track 'There Goes the Fear' from the radio back when it was out and my wife bought the album a few years ago, never delved further into who they were, where from etc.

Yay, I'm not completely alone! :pac:

Another one that I did know as I love his stuff is Steve Hillage... he came from a psychedelic rock background in the 70's and as Gong etc and went on to ambient and techno later on as System 7...

Steve Hillage - Hurdy Gurdy Man

    System 7 - Desir

    System 7 - Sinbad

Any other artists jump out that had a big shift in what they do?

Got any random facts about Patrick Prins? Was behind a large number of huge tracks mid-90s - Castle Trancelott, Peppermint Lounge, Subliminal Cuts, La Luna, Bits and Pieces... then just disappeared off the radar.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Yeah its funny how some of them disappear altogether and he is a really good example, I see from discogs nothing since 1997... he released many a classic alright back then under various names.

Another that has disappeared and rumoured to be dead is Fabio Paras, not as known by any means as Prins but had a pretty comprehensive list of tunes and remixes and was a great DJ...

    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Fabio+Paras

Sound Clash Republic - Sack the Drummer

Smells Like Heaven - Londres Strut

    Outrage - Drives Me Crazy

He also released the more commercial/cheese track 'Tall N Handsome' under the Outrage name...

Knew that Doves one, and not only that but pretty sure they changed from dance music because their studio burned down and they lost everything including some expensive equipment, and decided to go back to cheaper ways again with a guitar, basic drum kit etc. They said that on some interview a few years back anyway or might have read it in the Guinness books of trivia (their Encyclopedias of Rock or maybe Rap Dance and Techno) Rockopedia or not sure if they were being ironic or genuine, but it certainly is the same band.

Is Michael Gray of Weekend fame and SexOSonique of I Thought It Was You one and the same?

It's a bit mental alright, he must have had him in his teens, but it's true, I'll try and find you a link about it somwhere.
That's not the only interesting relationship he has with an Ed Banger artist. Surkin has confirmed he is indeed the young son of famed French producer Kavinsky – who rides heavy on the labels pull along with Justice and Sebastian. Crediting his "odd childhood" to his father, whom he says brought home different women every night, he admits Kavinsky is the reason he entered the French Parisian dance scene in the first place.

    http://www.cinemablend.com/music/Live-DJ-Review-DJ-Surkin-at-NYC-s-Le-Poisson-Rouge-12795.html

There's a good bit of debate about it, but Surkin has said it in a good few interviews, although it could be a PR thing.

    From Wikipedia:
Kavinsky's fellow producer Surkin claimed in an interview that Kavinsky was his father. However, this is highly unlikely, as Belorgey would have been 10 year old at the time of birth.

I saw that alright, but it's Wikipedia in fairness, and nobody really knows what age either of them are, and the Wikipedia pages don't give any sources. I'd be more inclined to believe Surkin himself.

Before any of them rose to fame, Gerry Rafferty of Baker's Street fame was in a band with Billy Connolly called the Humblebums, and pretty sure Finbarr Furey played with them too.

He also presented a music show for people with a stutter.

I knew the one about the Doves, it was all that was ever written about them when they first started off.

Dido's brother is Rollo (Armstrong) founder of Cheeky Records and producer under such guises as Rollo Goes...., Our Tribe, The O.T. Quartet, Faithless. And collaborations with Sister Bliss.

He also helped write and produce most of Dido's albums.

You sure? I thought he just done a remix with Red Jerry? Think it was the Hooj Mix.

The original version is a slower housier version with a piano rift lead, and not the more popular version that made the charts.

    :edit

    Here's the Original Version

    Hooj Mix.

I suppose in fairness Morrissey hasn't made much sense either in many years - they should have spent a little longer together as The Smiths.

I always think of this track when I see numerous 'Best Of', 'Greatest Hits' etc by The Smiths.
    Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
    Re-evaluate the songs
    Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

I'm just not sure any more... For some reason I had it in my head that Rollo was fully behind the original version, but checked wikipedia just before posting to see if I was correct, and they seem to think he co-produced it... The wiki page doesn't mention which version, so you kind of assume they're talking about the original

Discogs kind of make it sound like it too; http://www.discogs.com/artist/Felix

were one and the same as Nush of the bit more cheesy handbag "U Girls (Look So Sexy)"

And they were produced by Michael Gray and Jon Pearn of Sex-O-Sonique - "I Thought It Was You"

Michael had a big hit in his own name with "Weekend"

And Jon went on to form half of Bodyrox, who churned out one of the most overplayed tunes ever with "Yeah Yeah"

Sex-O-Sonique was clearly their highlight mind...

Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton made DnB under the name Chameleon, and Mark Pritchard also did solo DnB stuff under the name Use Of Weapons

Although, Nush's self titled first release was pretty sweet. One of the first tracks I bought on vinyl and it still sounds great. It's the type of track that I associate with the early days of Sides.

I liked their Nush 2 track also, and the "Bottom Dollars Save The Robot Mix" of Move That Body, but they were definitely cashing in with U Girls.

Love that Sex-O-Sonique track too. Although, it's essentially a rehash of Herbie Hancock track, still great mind.

Love both Pritchard and Middleton, two favourites of mine across the music they have put out since the early 90s... Reload & Global Communication being my favourites though.

And Pritchard more recently as half of Harmonic 33 produced some amazing downtempo stuff again... such as this from the 2005 album 'Music For Film, Television And Radio Volume 1'

    Planet 54

And again more recently on his own as Harmonic 313 with some pretty good dubstep or 'detroit style hip hop' as its labeled on discogs... suppose a pretty good description!

    Quadrant 3

This though as Reload in their early days together is a firm favourite.

Oh and have to add this also by Pritchard & Middleton... taken from one of my all-time favourite albums, 'A Collection of Short Stories'

Reload - Le Soleil et la Mer

Apparently Jimmy Saville invented DJing - he (claims) he was the first person to hook up two turntables together. Apparently he was too scabby to pay for a band and did not want gaps in between the songs so he made a simple crossover box - or so the story goes...

I've heard that before, so I reckon there might be some truth in it. I'm not sure about the "Crossover" box claim though.

He was definitely the first person to ever charge an admission fee to hear records being played at a dance.

He noticed after a few weeks that the gap between the tunes while they changed the records was something to be avoided, so he went and bought a second record player so they could immediately drop a tune in as soon as the first one finished.

Not sure where the whole "inventing rap" came from, but sure one look at his outfits all through the 80's - tracksuits, gold bling and cigars - and I think we can count him as an honorary G.

Dillinja & Lemon D are in the Guinness Book of World Records for owning the world's largest soundsystem geared specifically for bass music. Here's two short documentaries about it, one off Channel 4 from 2003 and one from the bonus DVD off their Killa Hertz LP.

If i ever win the euro millions I'll build a bigger one and clash them.
